Rossi returns to the Senate…temporarily

(Photo courtesy of Washington State Senate) Nine years after he left the Senate in 2003, Dino Rossi is back in the “upper chamber” of the Legislature. But it will be only for a few months. Rossi, who ran twice for governor and once for U.S. Senate after leaving the state Senate, was appointed Monday afternoon by the Metropolitan King County Council to fill the unexpired term of Cheryl Pflug, who resigned her 5th Legislative District Senate seat to take an…

WA election tally 1.9 million … and rising

WA election tally 1.9 million … and rising

Heading into Friday afternoon-evening updates, the 39 county election offices had processed 1.9 million ballots, or better than 52 percent of the state’s 3.6 million registered voters.  Counties estimated that they had over 600,000 ballots on hand to tally, and an undetermined number still in transit.  Final turnout could top 70 percent. Washington requires only that a ballot be postmarked on Election Day, and it can take days to get from the destination to the home county, particularly for those…

WA election: The count continues

WA election: The count continues

“Election Day” is history now, but in Washington, it’s just the beginning.  The count goes on … and on. The Election Night report from our 39 counties showed us a great snapshot — about 60 percent of the 2.4 million expected ballots were tallied.  The rest, either still in the mail or in the courthouses  awaiting the time-consuming process of scrutinizing each ballot, will be added over the coming days.  Most counties will be adding freshly processed ballots daily, and…

Murray, Rossi advance in WA Senate primary

Murray, Rossi advance in WA Senate primary

Incumbent Sen. Patty Murray and challenger Dino Rossi are advancing to Washington’s November Senate election. As expected, the three-term veteran Murray and Rossi, a former Republican state Senate budget chairman who ran for governor in 2004 and 2008,  easily emerged from a 15-person field in Washington’s primary Tuesday night. Although many votes remain to be tallied in the coming days, Murray had 46 percent and Rossi 34 percent as the election night tabulations were totalled. Clint Didier, who was backed…

There’s a lot to draw from here

There’s a lot to draw from here

It isn’t a high-profile part of election season, but it sure matters when you look at your ballot. It is the lot draw. Secretary Reed recently certified the list of 2010 Primary candidates who filed with the Office of Secretary of State. In doing so, he gave the final blessing on the candidate lot draw that determines where candidates’ names will appear on the ballot. This shows the order of candidates’ names for the U.S. Senate race, plus congressional, legislative…

WA Poll: Dino-Patty, pot, income tax and more …

The Washington Poll from folks at U-Dub shows a potentially tight race for U.S. Senate and support for both a state income tax on high-wage earners and re-asserting a two-thirds supermajority requirement for raising taxes in Olympia. The statewide poll, conducted May 3-23, has Democratic Sen. Patty Murray at 44 percent and Republican Dino Rossi at 40 percent.  Rossi, the Republican candidate for governor in the past two elections, was expected to jump into the Senate campaign on Wednesday.  The…

Media reports: Rossi hopping into Senate race

Media reports: Rossi hopping into Senate race

Dino Rossi, a marquee name for Washington Republicans ever since his oh-so-close loss for governor in 2004, plans to jump into the U.S. Senate race on Wednesday, according to media reports. His entry into the race against three-term Democratic Sen. Patty Murray, one of the Senate’s most powerful senior members, comes unusually late for a challenger.  Filing Week is now less than two weeks away, and ballots for the Top 2 Primary go in the mail July 30. Rossi’s decision…
