Talking the Mock…Election, that is

Talking the Mock…Election, that is

If voters in the 2011 General Election vote like how their younger counterparts did in this year’s State Mock Election, it won’t be good news for supporters of Initiative 1125 or I-1183. Washington students in grades 6-12 rejected both measures, with 54.19 percent opposing I-1125 (transportation tolls) and 56.2 percent against I-1183 (privatizing liquor sales).  I-1163 (long-term care workers and services) was the only measure approved by students, with 53.25 percent giving a thumbs-up. The grade 6-12 students voted on…

Three initiatives make the ballot

Three initiatives make the ballot

To nobody’s surprise, all three initiatives submitted to our Elections Division in July have qualified for this November’s General Election ballot. The third and final initiative to receive the go-ahead is I-1163, the SEIU-backed measure requiring background checks and training for long-term care workers. Signature checkers completed their review of the I-1163 sigs on Monday afternoon, and Secretary Reed certified it later in the day. I-1163 sponsors turned in nearly 340,000 signatures, way over the 241,153 bare minimum required to…

State election crews begin initiative checks

State election crews begin initiative checks

It’s that season again.  State election crews are hard at work, hunched over computer screens and stacks of initiative petitions, checking signatures to make sure they are valid, registered Washington voters and that the signatures match the one on file. The inspectors are checking signatures for three initiatives this year, and began Wednesday morning with the measure submitted by initiative activist Tim Eyman, I-1125, dealing with transportation tolls.  As with the other two initiatives, the I-1125 campaign turned in enough…

Taking the initiative

Taking the initiative

An elections worker counts pages for I-1183, the liquor privatization measure. Elections Division crews will review signatures submitted for three citizen initiatives. Together, sponsors estimate they brought in more than 1 million signatures by Friday’s deadline. They are: Initiative 1183 was the first measure to come in. It would close state liquor stores and privatize liquor sales, excluding smaller stores. I-1183 sponsors said they turned in 354,398 signatures. One 1183 official said that about 150,000 of the signatures were gathered…
