A Capitol day for rhodies

The middle of spring is usually when the rhododendron bushes on the Capitol Campus start to bloom. As if on cue, the rhodies are showing off their beautiful red, pink and purple colors for all to enjoy. If you want to see Washington’s state flower in all of its glory on campus, you should have at least another week.

A bloomin’ good time at Capitol

Rain or shine, the Capitol Campus is a great place to visit this time of the spring, thanks to the colorful outburst of flowers and tree blossoms. On the east side of the Legislative Building, flowers are starting to appear on the rhododendron bushes. Behind this blooming rhody, you’ll notice that the cherry trees are still showing off their blossoms on either side of the appropriately named Cherry Lane.

If you like rhododendrons and want to see them in all of their colorful glory at the Capitol Campus, now is the time to come. As these photos show, Washington’s state flower is in full bloom outside the Legislative Building. But the flowers will fall off the shrubs in the next few days, so don’t wait too long!

Washington’s Capitol Campus is a great place to visit year-round, but it’s especially worth a look now with the Japanese cherry trees exploding with pink blossoms.  There is a row of these trees in bloom on either side of the appropriately named Cherry Lane SW, just east of the domed Legislative Building.
