College civics tour, Day 6: Spokane Community College

  As part of Day 6 of his 2012 College Civics Tour, Secretary Reed visited Spokane Community College, speaking to students about the importance of active civic engagement and answering their questions. Secretary Reed also visited Spokane Falls Community College and WSU Pullman earlier today, and he will visit Northwest Indian College and Western Washington University in Bellingham later this evening.

Our Legacy Project has produced some outstanding biographies and oral histories since it began in 2008, and Thursday night in Seattle saw the official launch of its latest offering. John C. Hughes, chief historian for The Legacy Project, has penned a new book about the long, influential political career of Slade Gorton. Sam’s college civics tour: Day 4

During his visit Thursday morning to Spokane Community College, Secretary Reed spoke during the “Get Lit” program at the college. He discussed leadership and his own experiences in leadership positions. About 200 students attended. Later in the day, Secretary Reed visited Eastern Washington University in Cheney, Washington State University’s Tri-Cities campus and finally WSU’s main campus in Pullman, where the Secretary attended school.

Last week Sam visited the campus of Eastern Washington University in Cheney to congratulate the Eagles on becoming NCAA Division I football champions.  The Eagles won their championship in Frisco, Texas, on January 7, defeating Delaware in a 20-19, come-from-behind thriller.

Hemant Sonawala of Mumbai, India, with Secretary Reed Hoping to increase trade and tourism between Washington State and India, good friend of Sam Reed, Hemant Sonawala, met in the Secretary of  State’s Office today with colleagues from the Department of Commerce and the Lieutenant Governor’s Office.  Hemant is on a two-week trade mission, promoting India and the vast opportunities for small- to medium-sized Washington businesses to invest in that market.

Washington’s big win in the Supreme Court is great news for the cause of open government and transparency, say Secretary of State Sam Reed and Attorney General Rob McKenna. Ironically, the situation that prompted the federal case, still remains uncertain.
