While a drive to Deception Pass State Park spanning Whidbey and Fidalgo islands in northwestern Washington is scenic any time of the year, it’s especially gorgeous on sunny summer days. Need proof? Check out this 1936 photo of Rosario Beach, just north of Deception Pass. You can find the digitized photo by going to the Washington State Digital Archives website and then clicking on the State Parks and Recreation Commission, Photographs of Park Development, 1933-1938 collection.

Classic WA photos: lighthouses

Lighthouse at Mukilteo State Park. (Photos courtesy of Washington State Digital Archives) Lighthouses go hand in hand with Washington’s long coastline and Puget Sound shoreline. In fact, our state has about 25 lighthouses, most of them in active service, and all serving as magnets for camera-toting, cell-phone-equipped tourists. Past the cliffs that surround these waters is the nearly 90-year-old Deception Pass State Park, the most visited state park in all of Washington. The park…

Below is a picture of the Coupeville wharf on this fine, if cool, June-uary morning.

From Your Corner: Coupeville’s name

Located along picturesque Penn Cove on the northern half of Whidbey Island, Coupeville is a small, charming town of about 1,900 people that draws many tourists and visitors who step foot on Washington’s largest island and one of the largest islands in the lower 48 states. Coupeville is a great place to watch the annual Whidbey Island Race Week sailing competition (pictured below) in July. So how did the Island County seat acquire its name? Penn Cove was settled by…
