1) WSL OFFERS ONLINE TRUSTEE ORIENTATION
Join Carolyn Petersen, Assistant Program Manager for Library Development at the Washington State Library, as she provides free online orientation sessions for library trustees. Topics covered will include:
- Responsibilities of a board member;
- Differences between a governing and an advisory board;
- Roles of a governing and advisory library board;
- Differences between roles of the library board & the library director;
- Conduct of meetings;
- Open Meetings Act;
- What to do when the press calls;
- Resources from the State Library.
Four sessions of this workshop are available next week: both on Monday, February 7, and again on Tuesday, February 8, from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., and repeated from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. both days. 2) SUPPORT FOR CATALOGING COLLECTIONS AND ARCHIVES
The purpose of Cataloging Hidden Special Collections and Archives: Building a New Research Environment, an initiative of the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR), is to overcome the pervasive lack of knowledge about special collections and archives and to make information about these materials accessible to scholars and students. Through this initiative, grants are provided to institutions, including colleges and universities, research centers, museums, libraries, and historical societies, holding collections of high scholarly value that are difficult or impossible to locate through finding aids. Award recipients will create descriptive information for their hidden collections that will be linked to all other projects funded by this grant in order to form a federated environment that can be built upon over time.
In this funding round, CLIR expects to award about $4 million in grants ranging from $75,000 to $500,000. Online pre-proposals must be submitted by March 11, 2011; final proposals are due July 22, 2011. 3) SNAPDRAGON FUNDS SCHOOL LIBRARIES
The Snapdragon Book Foundation was started in December, 2008 to provide funds to improve school libraries for disadvantaged children. Grants will be awarded to public, private, and experimental schools. Founded by a former school librarian, this foundation exists to put books in the hands of kids. In a time when many schools are reallocating their funds to technology and audiovisual equipment, we hope to make sure that school libraries are still offering children good books to read.

4) PERCEPTIONS OF LIBRARIES 2010
The OCLC report, Perceptions of Libraries, 2010: Context and Community, a follow-up to the 2005 Perceptions of Libraries and Information Resources, is now available. The new report provides updated information and new insights into information consumers and their online information habits, preferences and perceptions. Particular attention was paid to how the current economic downturn has affected information-seeking behaviors and how those changes are reflected in the use and perception of libraries.
- The OCLC membership report explores:
- Technological and economic shifts since 2005
- Lifestyle changes Americans have made during the recession, including increased use of the library and other online resources
- How a negative change to employment status impacts use and perceptions of the library
- How Americans use online resources and libraries in 2010
- Perceptions of libraries and information resources based on life stage, from teens, to college students, to senior Americans.

5) YA READING FOR PLEASURE GRANTS
The Margaret Alexander Edwards Trust has announced the availability of small grants (under $5,000) for school and public libraries seeking to offer innovative programs that promote reading for pleasure for young adults. There is no specific deadline to apply. Applications will be received and reviewed on a rolling basis. Applications that feature new or creative programs will receive special consideration over those simply seeking funds for collection development or for a book discussion group.
