1) FREE COPIES OF RAILROAD STATIONS

Through a donation to the Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division’s Center for Architecture, Design, and Engineering, the Washington State Library has received seven copies of the latest publication in the Norton/Library of Congress Visual Sourcebook series, Railroad Stations: The Buildings That Linked the Nation by David Naylor. This is a distribution experiment for a remarkable series; previously published volumes chronicle American cemeteries, public markets, dams, canals, lighthouses, bridges, theaters, and barns. Each volume normally sells for $75.00 and includes a link to an online image library/portfolio.

A volume will be distributed to the first seven libraries who request it. If you are interested, please contact Carolyn Petersen at [email protected], toll-free at 866.538.4996, or 360.570.5560.

4) COME TO THE CELEBRATION

The Temple of Justice in Olympia is about to mark a significant milestone and everyone’s invited. In 2013, the Temple of Justice will be 100 years old. To commemorate this historic occasion, members of the public are invited to celebrate the centennial with cake, coffee, a small program, and informal tours after the reception. Come and join the festivities!

5) APPLY NOW FOR BOOKS FOR CHILDREN

For many children in rural areas, the local public library is often their primary source of reading material. Many rural schools either have no library or a library that is inadequate to meet the needs of the students. At a time when more and more children and their parents and teachers are using the public library, these same libraries are facing increasing financial hardships and are unable to buy the books their young readers need.

The Libri Foundation is a nationwide non-profit organization that donates new, quality, hardcover children’s books to small, rural public libraries throughout the United States. The books are used for storytelling; toddler, preschool, and after-school programs; summer reading programs; “book buddy” programs in which older children read to younger children; holiday programs; teacher check-out and curriculum support; early childhood development programs; school projects; and just to provide children with a “good read.” The Foundation is currently accepting applications for its 2013 BOOKS FOR CHILDREN grants. To encourage and reward local support of libraries, The Libri Foundation will match any amount of money raised by local sponsors from $50 to $350 on a 2-to-1 ratio. After a library receives a grant, local sponsors (such as formal or informal Friends groups, civic or social organizations, local businesses, etc.) have 4 months, or longer if necessary, to raise their matching funds.

The next deadline for BOOKS FOR CHILDREN grants is Wednesday, January 23, 2013. For additional information, go to www.librifoundation.org/apps.html.
