Library News
The Washington State Leadership and Assistance for Science Education reform Program awarded Sno-Isle libraries a grant in recognition of its efforts to promote science education. The money will go to the Sno-Isle Libraries Foundation to continue to support programs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. (The Herald, Everett, 05/27/14).

A new “Little Free Library” is now operating in Summit Park. This is the third in the Riverside Neighborhood. One was built as an Eagle Scout project and one as a Girl Scout project. The newest was erected by Vicki Rosenau. (Everett/Mulkiteo Tribune, Snohomish, 05/21/14).

The Wenatchee Public Library has seen a 12 percent increase in kids checking out books since the completion of a major remodeling project of the children’s room. The remodel was funded by the Wade family. The library is now launching a community-wide survey to better understand what people want from the library. (The Wenatchee World, Wenatchee, 06/01/14).

“Fizz, Boom, Read!” for children and “Spark a Reaction!” for teens are the themes for this year’s Summer of Learning programs at the Port Orchard library. The Port Orchard and Manchester libraries have activities happening nearly every day. There is a full program of story times and activities scheduled for children and teens. It’s “Fizz, Boom, Read!” at the Walla Walla library as well. There will be prizes for teens for reading and participating in programs and a special contest for book reviews. (Dayton Chronicle, Dayton, 06/04/14).

Editorials/Letters

The Friends of the Toledo Library is seeking volunteers to help establish and maintain a new library downtown. The goal is to open the library by Toledo Cheese Days in July. (The Chronicle, Centralia, 06/03/14).

The Orcas Highlands is opening a free library and inviting the community to the grand opening. Orcas Highlands will be the stewards of the Little Free Library. (The Island Sounder, EastSound, 06/04/14).

Buildings
King County Library System is seeking proposals for the Renton Highlands Library project. The new 14,663 square foot library will be built over 14, 976 square feet of structured parking. Plans, specifications, addenda, bidders list and plan holders lists are available free of charge online. (daily Journal of Commerce, Seattle, 06/02/14).

The Silverdale library is considering the Central Kitsap Community Campus as the location for the new library. The library would be located next to the YMCA and as the vision for the campus was always that it would be a safe, core gathering place for the community this would be an excellent fit. Rob MacDermid feels that placing the library at the CKCC would reduce traffic as well since members of the community could reach two destinations in one trip. Programs/Displays

The Raymond Library is sponsoring the Mad Scientist hot Labe for teens. Take a photo in the library’s Mad Scientist’s Photo Lab. This event is part of Summer Reading a Timberland Regional Library district wide program. (Willapa Harbor Herald, Raymond, 06/04/14).

Sequim Library hosted live music on fiddles, guitar and spoons at the Art in the library party. The Young Fiddlers played while visitors enjoyed snacks and the art that was on display as a part of the First Friday Art Walk. The Waterville Public Library is presenting “Fizz, Boom, Read!” as it summer reading program. The summer reading program is open to youth, preschool through young adult, with weekly science activities, prizes, presentations, and more. (Douglas County Empire Press, East Wenatchee, 06/05/14).
The Goldendale Library’s free summer reading program runs from Jun 1 through the end of August.
The 2014 Summer Reading program has a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) theme, supporting skill building in these areas. Fizz, Boom, Read! is the theme for children and “Spark a Reaction” for teens. The Kitsap Regional Library is conducting an online survey to gain insight into what its patrons want. The questions are related to the library programs and services. The data collected will be used in the 2015 Stategic plan. (Independent, Port Orchard, 06/06/14).
