1) DIGITIZATION GRANTS AWARDED FOR WASHINGTON RURAL HERITAGE 2015-2016

Congratulations to the latest group of public libraries and heritage organizations recently awarded digitization grants through the Washington Rural Heritage program!

Over the next year Washington State Library staff will be working with these organizations to digitize unique, historically significant materials held in their collections. Awardees will be trained in all aspects of digitization, and their collections will be publicly hosted and digitally preserved through the Washington Rural Heritage website and digital repository.

The statewide digital collection currently provides access to photographs, documents, audio and video recordings, and digitized cultural objects from more than 100 Washington institutions. In addition, the project includes more than 300 family photo collections, making previously inaccessible materials available freely to the public.

  • $5,000 – Asotin County Library in partnership with the Asotin County Museum
  • $2,141 – Ellensburg Public Library
  • $4,259 – Kettle Falls Public Library, Libraries of Stevens County
  • $5,000 – La Conner Regional Library District, in partnership with the Museum of Northwest Art (MoNA) and Western Washington University Libraries, Special Collections
  • $5,000 – Port Angeles Public Library, North Olympic Library System, in partnership with the Clallam County Genealogical Society
  • $3,600 – Whitman County Library, in partnership with the Colfax Fire Department, Town of Farmington, and Washington State University Manuscripts, Archives & Special Collections

2) EXPLORING TECHNOLOGY (ET) KITS GRANT CYCLE OPEN

Exploring Technology: ET kits grant cycle from the Washington State Library (WSL) is now open. The purpose of this grant cycle is to empower libraries as exploration centers for youth.

This grant cycle enables public and tribal libraries to apply for a Lego® Mindstorm® robotics kit or an EggBot® robotics kit. WSL expects youth will increase their science, technology, engineering, and math skills through interaction with the kits. The contents of the Mindstorm® Lego® robotics kit and the EggBot® Robotics kits can be found in the third section of the grant guidelines.

  • Application deadline: Applications must be postmarked or hand-delivered by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, August 28, 2015.

3) MAKE HISTORY COME ALIVE WITH ZINES!

Washington State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State, is sponsoring the 1st Annual Historical Zine Contest with co-sponsors Washington State Archives and Timberland Regional Library. Participants are asked to create a zine about some aspect of Washington history.

Entries will be accepted from four age groups:

  • Grades 4-6;
  • Grades 7-9;
  • Grades 10-12;
  • Adults of all ages.

All entries must be received by August 31, 2015. See the Zine Contest Flyer for entry form and more information.

A workshop to learn how to make a zine will be held at Yelm Timberland Library – Saturday, July 25 from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.

4) NCCE FREE TWO-DAY WORKSHOPS

Northwest Council for Computer Education (NCCE) is offering a series of free two-day workshops for K-12 Educators and Teacher-Librarians in Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington in summer 2015.

  • Registration is open now.
  • The workshops are free, but meals, lodging, and travel are not provided.

There is still space in most of these free workshops.

5) NORTHWEST ELEARN CONFERENCE 2015

Registration is now open for the tenth annual Northwest eLearn Conference. This year’s event will be held in Olympia, Washington from Thursday, October 22 – Friday, October 23, 2015. Two exceptional keynote speakers, Jesse Stommel of Hybrid Pedagogy and Audrey Watters of Hack Education, will launch Northwest eLearn Conference 2015.

NWeLC provides an opportunity for higher education and K-12 faculty, administrators, instructional designers, and technologists to come together to discuss best practices, collaborations, and ideas in integrating technology in learning.
