1) STAR_Net Webinar Series Begins

The STAR_Net team is proud to announce a monthly webinar series to assist libraries in providing STEM programs. Future webinar dates will be listed in the March STAR_Net News.

• The inaugural webinar, “NASA’s Solar System Ambassadors: Nationwide Support for Libraries”, will be on Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. PDT.
• Space will be limited to 100 registrants, and we anticipate this will be a very popular program; please register ASAP to reserve your spot (webinar will be archived).

2) STATEWIDE DATABASE LICENSING RFP RELEASED

The Washington State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State, announces the release of a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the Statewide Database Licensing project. Proposals are solicited from firms interested in providing web-based digital products or services to nonprofit libraries in Washington State.

The RFP solicits proposals for products in several categories:

1. Aggregated periodical databases covering a wide variety of subject areas with content that will be of interest to all types of nonprofit libraries and their patrons;
2. Newspapers, both national and local, with as many papers as possible from the State of Washington;
3. Resources designed for children and students (both K-6 and K-12) that include at least one search interface designed for the younger researcher, and with database content appropriate for elementary reading levels;
4. Products in other categories as described in the RFP.

The RFP is available on the OSOS web site procurements page: sos.wa.gov/q/p and via Washington’s Electronic Business Solution (WEBS): https://fortress.wa.gov/ga/webs/. Copies of the RFP documents in Microsoft Word format (for convenience) are available by request from the RFP Coordinator.

• The due date for Letters of Intent to Propose is Friday, March 11, 2016.
• The due date for proposals is Friday, April 1, 2016.

3) WASHINGTON RURAL HERITAGE DIGITIZATION GRANTS NOW ACCEPTING PROPOSALS

Would your library like to digitize its historical materials and special collections? Create an online community archive of unique materials from your patrons’ family collections? Partner with local historical societies and other organizations to collaboratively digitize local history resources?

Washington Rural Heritage (WRH), the Washington State Library’s statewide digitization initiative for public and tribal libraries, is currently accepting grant applications for 2016-2017 digitization projects. A total of $25,000 in LSTA funds is available to award five (5) or more grants up to $5,000 each.

• This grant cycle is open to all public and tribal libraries currently lacking a functioning digital repository. This grant cycle does not exclude current WRH partners.
• Libraries from communities of any size may apply at either the system or individual branch level.
• The application deadline for this grant cycle is Wednesday, May 25, 2016.

Collections digitized with these grants will be publicly accessible through Washington Rural Heritage at www.washingtonruralheritage.org.

4) PREPARE FOR DISASTER

The National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Pacific Northwest Region (NN/LM PNR) will host a virtual tabletop exercise featuring a scenario based on a major disaster. The disaster will impact the entire Northwest, disrupting communities everywhere. Which disaster will strike?

5) CONFERENCE PROPOSALS WANTED

Program proposals are now being accepted for the 2016 WALE Conference, to be held October 24-26, 2016 in beautiful Chelan, Washington. This is the 25th annual event for the Washington Library Employees (WALE), an interest group of the Washington Library Association.

All proposals from library staff, advocates, and partner organizations will be considered. Please reach out to local dynamic presenters or share your own skills and experience by leading a Conference Session or a Preconference Workshop.

• Proposals are due no later than Friday, April 8, 2016.
• Primary Contacts will be notified of proposal status by Friday, April 22, 2016.
• All Preconference Workshops will be held Monday, October 24, 2016.
• All Conference Sessions will be held Tuesday, October 25, 2016.
