1) ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR MICROSOFT IMAGINE ACADEMY 2016-2017 GRANTS

Applications are being accepted to fund Microsoft Imagine Academy projects for coding programs and Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification. Eligible libraries may apply for up to $4500 per library system for equipment purchased by the State Library, and/or the funds to purchase equipment of the applicant library’s choice. Funding for materials, promotional activities, and other activities which support project goals also may be requested.

• First review of applications will begin on Friday, August 2, 2016; applications received after August 2 will be reviewed and awarded on a funds-available basis as they are received.

2) PUBLIC LIBRARY POLICIES WEBPAGE UPDATED

The semiannual comprehensive update to the Washington State Public Library Policies webpage is now complete.

• Need an example of a Collection Development or Social Media policy? This is the place to go for a list and links to over 1,600 online Public Library Policy and Procedure documents, everything from ADA compliance to Volunteers.

3) SUPERCHARGED STORYTIMES – FREE RESOURCES

An archive of the very successful OCLC WebJunction’s Supercharged Storytimes pilot program is now available at no cost to any library staff member interested in strengthening their storytime practice with research-based early literacy concepts.

The archive consists of five modules, each comprising a 1-hour webinar recording with links to online supporting materials, including:

• An overview of the Supercharged Storytimes online pilot program, originally offered to more than 500 library staff members in six states in 2015;
• Discussion forums where those enrolled can connect with others who have signed up;
• Help on ways to incorporate research-based early literacy concepts into storytimes; and
• Resources that can help staff speak with confidence to parents, caregivers, and other library stakeholders about the learning that takes place during storytimes.

Participants who complete all 5 webinar archives will be eligible for a Certificate of Completion for 5 hours. Although the full orientation archive is provided as a self-directed learning experience, participants are encouraged to invite and engage their peers in the discussion forums. Susan Hildreth, former Director of the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), is joining the faculty of the Information School at the University of Washington as a Distinguished Practitioner in Residence, focusing on the future of public libraries.
