ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHAM) – As of Wednesday, smokers will not be allowed to light up within 100 feet of a library.
A new law put into effect by New York expands a public health law that bars smoking from hospitals, residential treatment facilities, and daycare centers, among other facilities.
Studies have shown that smoke-free laws can help tobacco users quit and help to prevent young people from starting to smoke.“Libraries are a public resource often used by senior citizens, school children and populations that may be more vulnerable to the types of respiratory illnesses that can be triggered by second hand smoke,” said Elizabeth Hamlin, Directory of Advocacy for the American Lung Association in New York State. “Library visitors deserve to breathe healthy air on public grounds.”
Signs will be posted at library doors to ensure the public is aware of the new law.
