Area libraries teem with summer activities, reading programs
All around the Walla Walla Valley libraries will be offering summer reading programs for young and seasoned readers this year.
Experts say summer reading helps maintain the reading skills gained during the school year plus generate interest in books and in using public libraries.
Area librarians are standing by, ready to make sure kids and adults have every opportunity to participate, as follows:
Milton-Freewater Public Library —
Teen Summer Challenge
June 17-Aug. 30: Readers age 13 — 18 who check out books from the library will get a special scratch-off ticket and win a prize each time they check out a book. They will also be entered into win grand prizes like an iPad or a $50 Dutch Bros gift card.
Adult Summer Reading Bingo
June 17-Aug.30: Summer Reading Bingo Challenge. Adults 18 and over can sign up and get bingo cards with challenges on each square to be completed by reading. Participants will be entered into win a Fitbit, a Kindle Fire, or a coffee gift card.
Children’s Summer Reading 2019
June 18-Aug. 15: This summer’s theme for readers up to age 13 is “Out of this World!” Children can sign up the nine week program that orbits around space. Sign-ups begin June 1. Children can attend weekly events, log their hours of reading, and check out books for special tickets to enter to win prizes like gift cards to Inland Octopus or a large doll house. Two program participants will have a chance to pick out a bike and helmet of their choosing.
Each week’s activities will have a different theme.
Programs for ages 6-13 are each Tuesday, 6 -7 p.m.
Story and craft time for ages birth-6 are each Thursday, 10:30 a.m.

Athena Public Library —
June 26-Aug. 14: “A Universe of Stories” will honor the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, courtesy of the University of Oregon which is bringing a traveling exhibit called “Our Place in Space.”
Mondays, Tuesdays, 10:30 a.m., story time for children ages birth-kindergarten; rocket science program for readers age 10 and older (preregistration is required).
Wednesday afternoons, weekly story hour with space activities; times vary.
Thursdays, 3 p. m., “Crafternoon” activities.
The reading program will host science experiments, participation badges, prizes and more.

Weston Public Library —
June 10-July 19: “A Universe of Stories” summer reading program will present activities 11 a.m. Fridays at Weston Park, ending with an Oregon Museum of Science and Industry planetarium event, 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., July 19.

Weller Public Library in Waitsburg —
The resident alien says “take me to your readers.” Hear a universe of stories and participate in space-related projects. The Universe of Stories summer reading program will be from 1:30-2:30 p.m. June 24-July 29. Storytime remains the same, at 10:30 Mondays. The Fun Factory will be in Preston Park at 2:45 p.m. Mondays.
