1 Book 4 North Platte seeking book nominations for 2020 | Lifestyles | nptelegraph.com

The 1 Book 4 North Platte committee is seeking nominations for the group’s 2020 book.

The book can be fiction or non-fiction, according to a press release from the organization, and it should be suitable for readers of all ages, ranging from teens to senior citizens. It should also be both interesting and thought-provoking, the release said.

In cooperation with the North Platte Public Library, book nominations can be submitted online by going to the Library Foundation website, npplfoundation.org, and clicking on 1 Book 4 North Platte.

Boxes for nominations are at A to Z Books, the North Platte Public Library, the Espresso Shoppe, the Faith Memorial Library in Wallace, and Allsorts and the Sutherland Public Library in Sutherland. For the selection process, books must be read and evaluated. As a result, nominations should be submitted by Oct. 31.

The first 1 Book 4 North Platte selection was “A Warrior of the People: How Susan La Flesche Overcame Racial and Gender Inequality to Become America’s First Indian Doctor,” by Joe Starita.

The book told the story of a talented and courageous woman who achieved her goals in spite of discrimination against both women and Native Americans.

Reactions to the book and to the first 1 Book 4 North Platte program were positive, the release said. Several book clubs read “A Warrior of the People,” and a reception announcing the book chosen for 1 Book 4 North Platte was well-attended, as was a public showing of the PBS documentary, “Medicine Woman,” which is about Susan La Fleshe and other Native American women who have followed her example.

More than 50 people attend a presentation by the book’s author, Joe Starita, a professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Humanities Nebraska has recently announced that he will receive the 2019 Sower Award in the Humanities. Starita will be honored on Thursday at Omaha’s Holland Performing Arts Center. On Oct. 25 he will be inducted into the Nebraska Journalism Hall of Fame.

According to Sherry Polk, a member of the committee, the group’s goal is to “foster a intergenerational community that promotes awareness and understanding while turning the pages of the same book,” the release said. Other committee members are Constance Brittan, Brenda Robinson, Connie Ruhlman and Phyllis Swigart.

“The response to our first selection was outstanding and the committee is very encouraged and is anticipating a great response to next year’s selection also,” Polk said. “North Platte has a strong literary foundation with many book clubs and community interest in a lecture series and Brown Bag luncheons. We have many readers who have a thirst for learning.”

The “One Book, One Community” movement began in 1998 when Nancy Pearl, executive director of the Washington Center for the Book in the Seattle Public Library, initiated “If All Seattle Read the Same Book.” Several cities followed suit and the movement grew rapidly. By 2007, the Library of Congress listed 404 “One Book” programs across the country. Since then the movement has grown in popularity and many more communities have organized “One Book” programs, including some in Nebraska.

Ellensburg Public Library offering new reading program | News | dailyrecordnews.com

The Ellensburg Public Library is offering a new program, The Primetime Family Reading Program, to the community this fall.

The six-week program is a collaboration between the Humanities Washington, Valley View Elementary School and the Ellensburg Public Library.

The program meets at 5:30 p.m on Wednesday in the library and started on Oct. 16. For the first meeting, the poetry was read to the children and then everyone played a game of “Would You Rather” to encourage the kids to participate in the events.

There is also a preschool area for young children, where they can play and read books together. This allows the older and their parents are participating in the reading and taking part in group conversations, the younger children will be enjoying themselves just as much. The target age range for the program are first through fifth graders, but all ages are accepted, which includes younger and older siblings.

“It was sort of an introduction of the program,” said Sue Hart, Youth Services Librarian.

While light poems were read in the first week, the program will be moving on to stronger literature by week two. Each week will have its own theme in the reading material, week two is fairness, then greed, courage, dreams and cleverness. Each week will consist of three books, examples of which include, “Where the Wild Things Are,” “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” and “The True Story of the Three Little Pigs.” Hart said that there will also be folktales from other cultures.

Families who have registered for the program will be given a book bag to take home and read with their children. These are the same books that are being read as a group at the next meeting. This allows families to become familiar with the stories which allows for better group conversation.

The program can only accept 25 families each year, and they currently have six openings. There is no cost to register for the program, which families can do by contacting Hart at 509-962-7218.

Hart said that the library offers multiple different programs to encourage reading for children and teens.

Space Planning: Reinventing Your Library Space- 3 seats available with WSL grant!

1) SPACE PLANNING: REINVENTING YOUR LIBRARY SPACE
Taking place in Portland, Oregon, on Friday, November 22, Washington State Library has reserved three seats for the Multnomah County session of this Public Library Association workshop.

Space Planning: Reinventing Your Library Space is a regional and interactive workshop that guides attendees through a day of learning on how space planning works. Whether you’re interested in rearranging existing furniture to increase circulation, make it easier for patrons to find programs, renovating, or even designing a new library, the Space Planning workshop will give you a concrete set of tools to use. This workshop uses learnings from retail stores to help librarians understand how to make libraries more accessible and easier to understand for patrons. Also covered is working with architects and interior designers and signage and wayfinding.

As a participant, you will work both individually and in groups to begin applying these new skills. Throughout the daylong training, New York University (NYU) professor and Forbes contributor, David Vinjamuri, will provide insights, best practices, and tools to help you think clearly about your library’s current space and map out a plan that will improve how you use your existing space, or how you might design a new space.

To be considered for one of these reserved seats go to Washington State Library Professional Development Grants.
