1) ELLUMINATE TRAINING FOR MODERATORS

If you plan to facilitate, host, or produce online meetings using Elluminate, you will want to sign up for the moderator trainings offered by Elluminate. These 90 minute live sessions are held several times a month. Two sessions are available next week:

2) EARLY LEARNING SYMPOSIUM

Find out how libraries can support early learning at the second annual Early Learning Public Library Partnership Symposium. The keynote speaker, Dr. Dimitri Christakis, is an internationally known expert on media and its effects on childhood development and behavior. Breakout sessions will include discussions of the Washington Early Learning Plan, evaluation in library and museum settings, and libraries and early learning coalitions.

3) GOING TO YOUR CUSTOMER – OUTREACH AND STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS

As part of the Libraries and Economic Development Series, the Business Special Interest Group (BSIG) from the Colorado Association of Libraries (CAL), the Colorado State Library, and the Colorado Library Consortium (CLiC) are pleased to offer a series of three free 30-minute webinars on Tuesday afternoons in August that will discuss how you can play a role in the economic development of your community. In this session you will learn how you library can

  • Assist the business community it serves;
  • Create and implement a business outreach plan to a Chamber of Commerce, small business development center, community group, or government entity.

4) I LOVE MY LIBRARIAN NOMINATIONS OPEN

Nominations are now open for the 2010 Carnegie Corporation of New York/New York Times I Love My Librarian Award. The award invites library users nationwide to recognize the accomplishments of librarians in public, school, college, community college and university libraries for their efforts to improve the lives of people in their community.

5) BEST SMALL LIBRARY IN AMERICA AWARD NOMINATIONS

Library Journal’s annual award for the Best Small Library in America, cosponsored by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, was founded to encourage and showcase the exemplary work of these libraries. Now in its seventh year, the award honors the public library that most profoundly demonstrates outstanding service to populations of 25,000 or less.

The winning library will receive a $15,000 cash award, a feature story in the February 1, 2011 Library Journal, membership and conference costs for two library representatives to attend the Public Library Association Biannual Conference in 2012 in Philadelphia, PA, and a gala reception at the conference. Starting with the 2011 award year, two finalist libraries will be awarded a $5,000 cash award as well as membership and conference costs for two library representatives to attend the PLA conference and the gala reception in 2012, and they will be given special mention in Library Journal.

6) YALSA RESEARCH GRANT

The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), the fastest growing division of the American Library Association (ALA), is offering the Frances Henne/YALSA/VOYA (Voice of Youth Advocates) Research Grant for 2011. This grant of $1000 provides seed money for small-scale projects that will encourage research that responds to the YALSA Research Agenda.

7) K-12 FIELD TRIPS GRANTS

The Target Field Trip Grants program provides funds for K-12 field trips in order to give students throughout the country the opportunity to explore more of the world outside the classroom. For the 2010-2011 school year, 5,000 grants of up to $700 each will be awarded to educators, teachers, principals, paraprofessionals, and classified staff who are employed by accredited K-12 public, private, or charter schools. Types of eligible trips include art, science, and cultural museum visits; community service and civic projects; career enrichment opportunities; and other events or activities away from the school facility. Funds may be used to cover trip-related costs such as transportation, ticket fees, food, resource materials, and supplies. Online applications must be submitted by September 30, 2010.

8) FREE COLLEGE OF DUPAGE TELECONFERENCES

The Washington State Library is sponsoring statewide membership for the College of DuPage teleconference series, Library Futures: Staying Ahead of the Curve 2011. The first session, Libraries and the Mobile Technologies Landscape, will be held on Friday, September 24, from 9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. PDT.
