Charities and Nonprofit news: resource updates, Facebook and Spokane event

Our office’s Corporations and Charities Division has been even busier than usual, updating some helpful resources, adding a Facebook page, and scheduling an educational event in Spokane in May.

The division recently published its new Charities and Nonprofit Board Service Handbook. If you go to either our Corporations or Charities homepage after going to our mainpage,  you can find the new handbook in the reading pane on the right.

Folks in the nonprofit and charities community also will be interested to know that the division’s Resources for Education and Program Development page has been updated. Check it out here.

With Facebook becoming such a common feature for so many of us, the Charities program has created its own Facebook page. Just click on the Facebook button on any of the Charities program webpages to see the Facebook page. We encourage you to “like” it so you can receive the newsfeed announcements.

Finally, the Corporations and Charities Division is holding a Charities and Nonprofit Education Symposium on May 4 in Spokane. The free event will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Spokane Falls Community College (3410 W. Fort George Wright Drive). Lunch will be provided. Topics to be covered include:
• Registration requirements for Washington charities and nonprofits;
• IRS requirements for charities and nonprofits;
• Washington state tax requirements;
• How to legally hold bingo events involving raffles and adult beverages; and
• Duties of a charities or nonprofit board.

For more info about the Spokane event, contact Charity and Nonprofit Education Coordinator Teresa Glidden at (360) 725-0373 or [email protected].  The division will hold a similar event in the Puget Sound area in June. More details to come.
