1) SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE FOR ARSL FALL CONFERENCE

Rural and tribal library staff are invited to apply to attend the 2014 conference of the Association for Rural & Small Libraries (ARSL), which will be held September 4 – 6, 2014, in Tacoma, Washington. The Washington State Library, with funding from the Library Services Technology Act (LSTA), is providing full scholarships for this event. Scholarships will include transportation, all conference fees and meals, and lodging. Thursday and Friday evening meals will be covered on a per diem reimbursement.

Those eligible for the award must:

  • Work at a small and rural library or library branch (serving 10,000 or fewer) in Washington State;
  • Commit to a follow-up project (webinar, printed article, blog post, etc.);
  • Demonstrate a willingness to share knowledge gained at the conference with fellow library/district staffers;
  • Show how conference attendance will help meet the library’s goals related to the eight LSTA priorities;
  • Submit a signed authorization from someone in your organization who has approved your attendance at the conference.

Preference will be given to first-time ARSL conference applicants, but individuals who have attended previously may also apply for full scholarships. Applications will be accepted through Friday, May 30, 2014. For additional information and to apply, go to sos.wa.gov/q/arslscholars. Questions? Contact Carolyn Petersen at [email protected], 360.570.5560, or toll-free at 1.866.538.4996.

2) FIRST TUESDAYS – WEEDING MADE EASY

Chris Rippel works for the Central Kansas Library system and knows firsthand how difficult weeding can be for librarians. To assist in this process Chris used Excel to create Collection Manager, a free tool that can analyze the following three types of reports from your automation system:

  • Number of items in each library collection;
  • Last year’s circulation for each collection;
  • Number of titles added to each collection during the past year.

Once this information is compiled by Collection Manager, staff can tell which collections to weed, which collections to expand by buying more titles this year than last year, which collections to decrease by buying fewer titles, and even how many titles to purchase in each collection. Find out more about this helpful new tool at the next First Tuesdays, Weeding made easy, where Chris Rippel will demonstrate how to use this free product and how to interpret the results.

Designed as a continuing education opportunity for staff of libraries in Washington State, this free web presentation, which will take place on June 3, 2014, from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. PDT, lets attendees share their skills and successes and learn about new topics. Sessions are recorded so that others may listen at their own convenience. For more information about First Tuesdays, visit sos.wa.gov/q/tuesdays. For instructions on joining the presentation, visit sos.wa.gov/q/FirstTuesdays.

3) MEMORIAL FOR PROFESSOR ELIZA DRESANG

The world lost a brilliant mind and a very special human being with the passing of Dr. Eliza T. Dresang on Monday, April 21, 2014. Eliza held the endowed Beverly Cleary Professorship in Children and Youth Services at the University of Washington iSchool. She was a champion of children’s literature and digital resources and was widely known for her 1999 book, Radical Change: Books for Youth in a Digital Age, which helped countless librarians and teachers better understand and evaluate literature created for computer-savvy children. Her most current research, Project VIEWS2, funded through the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and in partnership with the Washington State Library and the Early Learning Public Library Partnership (ELPLP), focused on measuring early literacy outcomes for children from birth to entering kindergarten.

You are invited to visit and share your memories at a memorial website for Dr. Dresang at eliza.ischool.uw.edu. A memorial honoring her life will be held in the Lyceum at the Husky Union Building (also called HUB, room 160) on Wednesday, May 14, from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. PDT. All are welcome to attend.

In addition, the iSchool and Eliza’s family have established the Eliza Dresang Endowed Fellowship in Children & Youth Services. If you would like to contribute, please visit sos.wa.gov/q/DresangFund.

5) SURVEYING SOCIAL MEDIA PRACTICES

The College of Communication & Information of Florida State University (FSU) is seeking research participants who are currently employed as young adult librarians in public libraries and who would be willing to participate in a research survey or interview. Of particular interest are those who use social media in their work as professional librarians. The purpose of this study is to better understand how young adult librarians interact with young adult patrons through their library’s social media profiles. It will also investigate the roles that are envisioned by young adult librarians for the use of social media in marketing and promoting library services.

For additional information or to volunteer for the study, contact Abigail Phillips at [email protected] or go to sos.wa.gov/q/abigail. For additional information on your rights as a research participant, contact FSU’s Human Subjects Committee at 850.644.8673.
