It may not seem like it, but one can of food can go a long way. Especially at the Burlington Public Library. This month, the library is participating in a Food for Fines program, where one donation of a canned or nonperishable good will knock $1 off patrons’ late fees. This October marks the 10th anniversary of Timberland Reads Together, a month-long celebration of reading, learning, and reflections – together. The 27 community libraries that comprise Timberland Regional Library (TRL) will present author talks and book group discussions, workshops, cooking demonstrations, films and music. The two new libraries at Coulee Dam schools have a lot of new books. And more on the way. A good share of the new books in the elementary and secondary libraries have been placed there by North Central Library District, and Director Dan Howard said this week that a lot more are on the way. The Central Skagit Rural Partial Library District is issuing library cards to registered users. Membership is open to non-city residents in the Sedro-Woolley School District. Since taking her post as director May 5, Jill Pannkuk has established a phone number and a physical office for the library district in downtown Sedro-Woolley. Contest asks kids to write a letter to their favorite author.

An annual national contest encouraging students to write about a favorite or influential book is underway. The ‘Letters About Literature’ competition encourages young readers to write letters to their favorite authors, living or dead, and explain how a particular book by that author changed their view of the world or themselves. The contest, co-sponsored by the Washington State Library, is for students and home schooled youngsters in grades 4-12. (Grant County Journal, Ephrata, 09/25/14).

Bronze a big part of community eye-catchers.

A year and a half after its arrival, the two children outside the library remain a point of pride for the library staff. “I think it’s awfully cute,” Jean Frank, the city librarian said of Paul Anderson’s “Break Time.” We let the community choose and I think it’s very fitting, it’s two kids reading,” Frank added.  Programs/Displays

Winners announced for teen summer reading program at Denny Ashby Library.

Stacy Barnett and Ashley Cook each won $50 as winners in the teen summer reading program at the Denny Ashby Library. The two participated in the Spark a Reaction Program. Participants submitted short book reviews for each book read and these two lucky readers had their reviews drawn by library board members. (East Washingtonian, Pomeroy, 10/01/14).

Time for fall book discussions.

Persons who enjoy a good read, and discussing books with others, are invited to take part in the White Salmon Valley Community Library’s fall book discussion series. Discussions are scheduled for the third Monday of the month through December. (The Enterprise, White Salmon, 10/02/14).
