1) 10 TECHNOLOGIES TO MAKE LIBRARY LIFE EASIER

Learn “10 Technologies to Make Library Life Easier”, February’s free First Tuesdays webinar. Travis Montgomery, Liberty Lake Library technology specialist, will share his hands-on experience with 10 different solutions for common repair and materials maintenance which face frontline library staff. Some of these solutions are free while others can be purchased for under $50.

The ten technologies covered will be: Disc Resurfacing, Preventative Maintenance, Printer Maintenance, Basic Wireless Networking, Drive Vaccine, Microsoft IT Academy, M Disc Archival Backup, Hard Drive Cloning, Power Point Library Information, and Microsoft Steady State.

•  This free web presentation will take place on February 3, 2015, from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. PST.

• First Tuesdays is designed as a continuing-education opportunity for staff of libraries in Washington State. Sessions are recorded so that others may listen at their own convenience.

2) FREE BOOKS FOR WASHINGTON LIBRARIES

Thanks to the generosity of Kitsap Regional Library, Pierce County Library, and Seattle Public Library Foundation, Washington State Library has the following titles to distribute for reading club kits or as a community read to any public or school library within Washington State:

•  For All of Us, One Today by Richard Blanco (poetry in English and Spanish) – 248 copies
• The Paris Wife by Paula McLain (fiction) – 31 copies
• Stories for Boys: A Memoir by Gregory Martin (nonfiction) – 91 copies
• Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood by Marjane Satrapi (black & white comic-style book about growing up in Iran in the 1980s) – 15 copies
• The Leisure Seeker by Michael Zadorin (fiction) – 71 copies

Usually a minimum order of 5 copies of the same title is required but we are offering a mix and match special on these titles, minimum of 5 total books per order.

These will be distributed on a first come, first served basis at no charge to the requestor.

3) WLA BOARD CANDIDATES NEEDED

Are you willing to step forward as a leader in the library association community and join the Washington Library Association Board of Directors?The WLA Board of Directors is seeking qualified candidates to be considered for several positions (see below).

• Vice President/President-Elect

o   Elected for a one-year term as Vice President/President-Elect.

o   Serves subsequent one-year terms as President and Immediate Past President.

o   Estimated 1-2 hours per week on average time commitment.

•  Board Directors (Two Positions Open)

o   Elected for a two-year term.

o   Estimated 1-2 hours per month on average time commitment.

•  Secretary/Treasurer

o   Elected for a two-year term as Secretary/Treasurer.

o   Estimated 1-2 hours per week on average time commitment.

• ALA Councilor

o   Elected for a four-year term as ALA Councilor.

o   Estimated 4-8 hours per month on average time commitment.

o   Attends ALA Midwinter (January) and ALA Annual Conference (June)

•  PNLA Representative

o   Elected for a two-year term as PNLA Representative.

o   Estimated 1-2 hours per week on average time commitment.

o   Attends PNLA annual conference, PNLA 2-day planning retreat and two online board meetings.

4) ARSL CALLS FOR 2015 CONFERENCE PROPOSALS

The Association for Rural & Small Libraries (ARSL) invites proposals for break-out session presentations for the 2015 Conference to be held in Little Rock, Arkansas, October 1 – 3, 2015. Proposals for these 1-hour sessions can be submitted using this online form.

The deadline to submit the form is March 13, 2015.

• All proposals will be reviewed by the Conference Programming Committee. Those who submit a proposal will be notified whether or not it was accepted by April 6, 2015.

This year’s conference theme is “Rockin’ in Little Rock.” Themes we hope to see among proposals include the following:

• Libraries Rock ….
• Building Community Partners
• Solving Problems with New Approaches
• Creative Management
• Technology Tools

Workshops must be geared toward the small and rural library audience, and those that are practical, hands-on, and how-to are preferred. This is not the proper venue for post-graduate dissertations or marketing products. Additional instructions are included on the proposal form.

Workshop presenters will receive ONE complimentary conference registration per workshop title selected (i.e., a team of three presenters working on one workshop will receive one complimentary registration).
