1) WASHINGTON RURAL HERITAGE GRANT CYCLE OPEN

Would your library like to digitize its historical materials and special collections? Create an online community archive of unique materials from your patrons’ family collections? Partner with local historical societies and other organizations to collaboratively digitize local history resources?

Washington Rural Heritage (WRH), the Washington State Library’s statewide digitization initiative for public and tribal libraries is currently accepting grant applications for 2015 – 2016 digitization projects. A total of $25,000 in LSTA funds is available to award five (5) or more grants up to $5,000 each. To date, more than 100 cultural institutions throughout Washington, including 39 libraries, have contributed to this growing collection of digitized primary sources.

This year’s grant cycle is open to all public and tribal libraries currently lacking a functioning digital repository. This grant cycle does not exclude current WRH partners. Libraries from communities of any size may apply, at the system or individual branch level. Collections digitized with this grant will be publicly accessible through Washington Rural Heritage at www.washingtonruralheritage.org.

To learn more about the project and to see a full list of contributors to WRH, visit sos.wa.gov/q/WRHabout. To review eligibility requirements, grant guidelines, and to download grant applications, go to sos.wa.gov/q/grants. For questions and to discuss potential projects, applicants are encouraged to contact Evan Robb, Washington Rural Heritage Project Manager, at 360.704.5228 or [email protected].

The application deadline for this grant cycle is Friday, May 15, 2015.

2) RECORDED BOOKS ONECLICK RENEWALS

No fooling! April 1 marks the renewal date for most Washington libraries participating in the OneClickdigital group purchase of downloadable audiobooks and eBooks from Recorded Books. Recorded Books is offering either of two renewal incentives:

  1. A 20% discount for current active public and academic library subscriptions will mitigate the effect of the loss of the LSTA subsidy provided by the State Library, meaning most libraries will see no price increase despite the loss of the previous year’s subsidy.
  2. Recorded Books will also be offering a “Zinio for Libraries” group purchase through the Washington State Library. To be eligible to participate libraries must circulate less than 300,000 items per year and not be currently offering Zinio.

For public and academic libraries, renewal is automatic unless a cancellation form is received by March 27. The form is available at sos.wa.gov/q/cancel. K-12 libraries send a P.O. Renewal info is found at sos.wa.gov/q/join.

Recorded Books representative Bryan Messersmith will be contacting WA One Click Digital customers regarding the renewal.  If you have questions please reach out to Bryan at [email protected] or 206.852.8726.

For libraries not currently participating in the OneClickdigital group purchase from Recorded Books, detailed information is available at sos.wa.gov/q/join, or contact Will Stuivenga at [email protected] 360.704.5217.

3) SAN JUAN ISLAND LIBRARY WINS AWARD

Congratulations are due to the San Juan Island Library for having won the 2015 Public Library Association’s EBSCO Excellence in Small and/or Rural Public Library Service Award. This award honors a public library that demonstrates excellence in service to a community of 10,000 people or fewer.

According to the official announcement, “This year’s $1,000 award recognizes the San Juan Island Library in Friday Harbor, Washington, for the impressive quality of its digital communications, as well as the depth of offerings in its collection and services, including outreach to seniors, a growing Hispanic population and the business community (population 7,690).”

The award will be presented at the American Library Association’s Annual Conference in San Francisco, this coming June. Congratulations, San Juan Island Library on this well-deserved award. We salute you!

4) STORYCORPS COMES TO NISQUALLY

The American Library Association (ALA) Public Programs Office, in partnership with StoryCorps, has announced that the Nisqually Tribal Library, located near Olympia, Washington, is one of 10 public libraries that will participate in the StoryCorps @ your library program.

Funded by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), StoryCorps @ your library will bring StoryCorps’ popular interview methods to libraries while developing a replicable model of oral history programming. The selected sites will receive $2,500 in grant funding, plus training and equipment to collect oral histories at their libraries. More than 300 libraries applied for the 10 available spots in this program. Winners were selected through a peer-review process.

Congratulations to the Nisqually Tribal Library on winning this significant award. We look forward to hearing the stories that are the result. And we salute you!

5) WELL-FED & WELL-READ – SUMMER MEAL SITES

Well-Fed and Well Read: Summer Meal Site Served by the Public/School Library free webinar coming in March. Combatting the summer learning slump experienced by lower income kids is going to take a village. One promising solution is having a summer meal site served by either a school or public library. Preliminary results from Oregon show that kids do better when they can access both services at the same site.

On Tuesday, March 24th from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m., Jennifer Mitchell, Summer Food and Special Projects Specialist with OSPI, and Cecilia McGowan, Children’s Services Coordinator at the King County Library, will share tips and tricks on what it takes to set up a summer meal site and also provide library services at that site. If you are interested in joining a growing movement to provide reading materials to children via a summer feeding site, or even applying to be one, you will want to listen to this free webinar.
