1) WSL REMEMBERS JOHN GLENN & LIBRARY 21

In recognition of John Glenn’s heroic lifetime of service, a recent WSL blog post tells the story in words and pictures of a meeting between Glenn and Washington State Librarian Maryan Reynolds at the Century 21 Seattle World’s Fair in 1962, in the “Library 21” exhibit sponsored by the American Library Association and staffed by State Library employees.

The event is chronicled in Reynolds’ 2001 history of the State Library, Dynamics of Change. The State Library also holds the source materials for the book, which include additional photographs of the meeting, not included in the book. A description of the collection is available in the WSL catalog. A recent Washington State Archives Facebook post provides additional pictures from John Glenn’s visit to the Seattle World’s Fair.

3) NEA BIG READ GRANTS

The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Big Read program is accepting applications from libraries and non-profit organizations to develop community-wide reading programs between September 2017 and June 2018. NEA Big Read is a national program that broadens our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book.

Organizations selected to participate in the program receive a grant, educational and promotional materials, and access to online training resources and opportunities. Approximately 75 organizations from across the country will be selected. Funding ranges from $5,000 to $20,000. 13 new titles have been added to the Big Read list this year.

For more information, use this shortcut: sos.wa.gov/q/BigRead. The application deadline is January 26, 2017.

4) EZRA JACK KEATS MINIGRANTS

The Ezra Jack Keats Foundation, which fosters children’s love of reading and creative expression in our diverse culture, celebrates the 29th year of its Mini-Grant program with a call for proposals. Approximately 60 grants of $500 each will be awarded to qualifying teachers and librarians at public schools and libraries across the United States.

“For almost 30 years it has been our joy to award Mini-Grants to support teachers and librarians who reach beyond the standard curriculum—creating programs that inspire and encourage students in a creative and cooperative context,” says Deborah Pope, Executive Director of the Ezra Jack Keats Foundation. “It is essential that educators have resources to create these special programs, and this year we’ve revamped our application to make it even easier for them to apply for funding.”

To learn more about Mini-Grants, including this year’s criteria, visit Ezra Jack Keats Mini-Grants. The deadline to apply is March 31, 2017. Decisions will be emailed to all applicants by early May.
