WA territorial seal wins its Archives tourney opener

The Washington territorial seal has advanced to the quarterfinals of our Archives Treasures tourney after knocking off the 38-star 1886 U.S. flag 58 percent to 42 percent. We’re down to our last of our eight first-round games. It’s the 1859-60 Crosby Store ledger against the 1857 map of Washington Territory. We’ll start the online poll for that matchup this afternoon, so be watching.

1886 U.S. flag tops Archives Treasures

(Photo courtesy of Washington State Archives) The votes are in, and the winner of July’s Archives Treasures is a 38-star U.S. flag from 1886. The flag, which was given to the State Archives by the University of Washington ROTC in 2011, gathered 47percent of the votes, edging photos of the Greenwood Ark (39 percent) and Olympia Odd Fellows Lodge photos (14 percent). We’ll kick off the July edition of the Library Jewels next week, so be watching!
