Civil-rights leaders Nat and Thelma Jackson and Arthur Fletcher featured in new exhibit

Profiles of Arthur Fletcher and Nat and Thelma Jackson, three remarkable civil-rights leaders, are the latest chapters in Legacy Washington’s overview of 1968 “The year that Rocked Washington,” an exhibit that will open Sept. 13 at the State Capitol. Change was in the air. Everywhere. It was the year when Vietnam, civil rights, women’s liberation, and conservation coalesced — and a year when tragedy led the 6 o’clock news with numbing regularity.  When Arthur Fletcher announced his candidacy for Washington lieutenant…

Washington State Library launching grant-funded STEM program

Washington State Library launching grant-funded STEM program

In fall 2017, the Washington State Library teamed up with the Imagine Children’s Museum of Everett, School’s Out Washington and the Spokane County Library District for a grant application to fund a program to promote literacy-based STEM activities for children ages 3 to 10 and their families. The application was successful. This STEM program stood out from many others because the program begins the exploration of scientific concepts through sharing a children’s book. Few other STEM programs, if any, are literacy-based….

Check out 1950 Washington highway map

You can make some interesting observations by closely examining the map, which was published by the Washington State Highway Commission: The main north-south highway in Western Washington was U.S. 99, which connected Bellingham, Everett, Seattle, Tacoma, Olympia and…

From Digital Archives: Boat racing in Tri-Cities

(Photo courtesy of Washington State Digital Archives.) For many in the Northwest, a summer highlight is watching the hydros race on the Columbia River in the Tri-Cities in late July or on Lake Washington in Seattle a week later during Seafair. With the 48th running of the Columbia Cup races taking place this weekend at Columbia Park in the Tri-Cities, we checked the Digital Archives for a photo of an early boat race there. Sure enough, there was one. This…

Sarah Palin heading to Richland for Turkey Day?

Media celeb Sarah Palin, busy promoting her new best-seller campaign recap/memoir, “Going Rogue,” reportedly will celebrate Thanksgiving with her family at “Aunt Katie’s house” in the Tri-Cities. The Tri-City Herald reports that the former veep candidate and former Alaska governor is expected to break bread with Katie Johnson, Palin’s mother’s sister.  Palin, who went to college in Idaho and has a number of friends in Washington, including Dino Rossi, is the granddaughter of Hanford workers. Her mother, Sally, graduated from…

Newspapers in the Library

Newspapers in the Library

I recently did a post on the loss of the “Spokesman Review”, however, I am happy to report that we still have many newspapers in the library to provide a touch of home for our patrons. As newspapers can be very expensive we cannot purchase all of them that are published in Washington, but we do our best. To that end we carry the larger metropolitan areas (excluding Spokane). This includes Olympia, Seattle, Yakima, Tri-Cities, Everett, Tacoma, Wenatchee, Vancouver, and…
