3)  NEWSBANK OFFERS FREE SEATTLE TIMES ACCESS THROUGH MARCH

As was recently announced, ProQuest is losing its rights to distribute The Seattle Times in electronic format. To assist in providing time for adjusting to this loss, NewsBank has offered to provide access at no charge to their newspaper database which features The Seattle Times archive from 1987-present for any library that has participated in the Statewide Database Licensing Project. NewsBank will provide this free access through March 31, 2009. Access will be via the same authentication that you currently use for ProQuest and will be available to all your authenticated patrons both in house and remotely.

In order to arrange this free access, simply contact Audrey Bashaw at NewsBank at [email protected] or 800.-243-7694. Audrey will handle setting up your authentication and providing you with the links you will need. For other questions, please contact Will Stuivenga [email protected] 360-704-5217 or Ahniwa Ferrari [email protected] 360-570-5587 or use our toll free number: 866-538-4996.

4)  WASHINGTON STATEWIDE DATABASE TRIALS GO LIVE

The Washington State Library is pleased to host its 2008 Statewide Database Trials. The trials allow libraries to test out new and interesting databases without having to purchase them. Nearly 70 products are being offered to trial from 12 different vendors. The trials began November 14th and will last through the end of December.

Once the trials are finished, please remember to fill out the survey expressing interest in those databases that you would like to investigate further. Find the trials at www.secstate.wa.gov/quicklinks/DBTrials2008.

5)  JOIN WAYFINDER, THE CATALOG OF WASHINGTON LIBRARIES

The Washington State Library is currently accepting applications from libraries to join as partners in the Wayfinder project. Libraries may join Wayfinder on January 1 or July 1 of any calendar year. The response deadline for January 1, 2009 is December 12. A list of current partners is available at www.secstate.wa.gov/quicklinks/waywho.

Joining Wayfinder as a full partner helps libraries provide access to their collections through several additional avenues, including the open web. Your records will appear in Wayfinder itself (www.secstate.wa.gov/quicklinks/searchwayfinder), a single catalog for the libraries of Washington, in OCLC WorldCat (www.worldcat.org), freely accessible on the web, and by extension, through Google, Yahoo! and other online search engines that index WorldCat records. All of these can link directly into your local library system to show your patrons what you have, and how to obtain it.

Joining Wayfinder requires purchase of OCLC cataloging, resource sharing, and WorldCat services through Washington Group Services. The cost may be less than you think. For more information, including an “intent to participate” form, visit www.secstate.wa.gov/quicklinks/wayinfo. For pricing, contact Will Stuivenga [email protected] 360-704-5217 or Ahniwa Ferrari [email protected] 360-570-5587 or toll free 866-538-4996.

6)  FIRST TUESDAY ON DECEMBER 2 WILL FEATURE WTBBL

On Tuesday, December 2 at 9:00 a.m., join us for a First Tuesdays presentation by Danielle King of the Washington Talking Book & Braille Library, discussing WTBBL and the services it can offer to your customers.

This free webinar will be available at webj.horizonwimba.com, Washington Training Room 1. First Tuesdays began as a service to small and rural libraries, but those from any library are welcome to take part. Branch staff should first check with supervisors. If you have never participated in any Wimba session, you will need to go through a quick set-up wizard first. For more information, contact Susan Barrett, [email protected] or toll free 1-866-538-4996. Archival recordings of past programs can be found at www.secstate.wa.gov/quicklinks/tuesday.
