Clippings, January 9, 2009, Part 2

The Ocean Shores Friends of the Library will host the first Nonprofit Leaders Conference for Coastal and Southwest Washington in October of 2009. The Friends are seeking letters of support to accompany their application to the Grays Harbor Foundation for funding to keep the cost of conference attendance as low as possible, hopefully $35. Advice in seeking grants is particularly important in these times. “Most of our non-profits are all-volunteer, rural, and small city organizations that share little in common with urban nonprofits with paid employees. Classes in the I-5 corridor are too expensive and do not meet our need for ongoing support. Nevertheless, our leaders, boards, and volunteers need to better understand how grant-makers work, which grant makers could help them, and how to communicate effectively to obtain funds from outside their beleaguered communities.” (The North Coast News [Ocean Shores], 12-24-08)

Letters and Editorials:

A letter writer tells how important books are to her-“I grew up in the coal fields of West Virginia and had very little access to printed material….” She urges a yes vote for the Shelton Timberland annexation [which passed resoundingly]. (Shelton-Mason County Journal, 12-25-08)

Programs and Displays:

“Pierce County Library’s third annual Manga Art Contest brought in 228 works of art from 190 students in the county.” Fifteen awards were given, including two to Puyallup youth. (The Herald [Puyallup], 12-25-08)

The Connell Branch of the Mid-Columbia Library held a Christmas crafts and story time, with a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus. (Franklin County Graphic [Connell], 12-25-08)

The Snoqualmie Library (KCLS) held a “Knitting for Boys and Girls” class, with several adult mentors and yarn and starter kits provided by the Helping Hands Foundation. The St. John Library (Whitman County Library) hosted a Rock Band Jam with the library system’s new Wii, “to counter after Christmas boredom”. The third annual adult winter reading program will soon begin, with three book reviews exchangeable for a free latte card, and more reviews for a cookie to go with the latte. Story Hours, Summer and Winter Reading and Early Learning:

The Belfair Timberland Library invites attendees to its Younger Page Turners, grades 4-6, Page Turners (for adults), and Junior Page Turners, grades 1-3, for book chats and fun. (Belfair Herald, 12-25-08)

The Redmond Regional Library (KCLS) is closed for renovation through early January, but Hush Baby Story Time is still being held in the meeting room. (Redmond Reporter, 12-17-08)
