1)  WASHINGTON STATE LIBRARY FUNDING AT RISK

The proposed state House budget cuts $11 million in state funds from the Office of the Secretary of State over the biennium. Because the State Library receives $10 million from this funding source in the biennium, this cut could severely impact not only WSL library services, but could also put the maintenance of effort and match for Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) at risk, resulting in a negative impact on libraries throughout the state.

2)  STATEWIDE DATABASE TRIALS – UPDATES

Language learning resources continue to be the subject of the statewide database trials. Access to Mango Languages and Auralog’s Tell Me More will continue through April. An interest form is now available for those libraries that would consider purchasing these products. Interest forms allow us to arrange group purchases and negotiate better prices for Washington libraries, so please take a moment to fill one out: www.secstate.wa.gov/quicklinks/DBTrials2009InterestForm.

3)  STATE’S FIRST POET LAUREATE VISITS WSL FOR EVENING PROGRAM

In honor of National Poetry Month, the Washington State Library is excited to announce that we will be hosting our state’s first poet laureate, Samuel Green, for an evening event on Thursday, April 9, 2009, at 6:30 p.m.

Sam Green is a native of Washington and currently resides on Waldron Island. He has authored numerous poetry collections, has been a visiting poet and instructor for several Washington and northwest universities and colleges, and has been the editor of Brooding Heron Press for the past 30 years. Mr. Green’s poetry collection The Grace of Necessity won the 2008 Washington State Book Award in Poetry.

Please join us for this celebration of poetry in the main reading room on the second floor of the library. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. Seating is limited and available on a first come basis. 4)  APRIL FIRST TUESDAYS FEATURES LIBRARIES AND HARD TIMES

The First Tuesdays program on April 7 at 9:00 a.m. will discuss Libraries and Hard Times, with Jennifer Fenton and Rand Simmons of WSL. 6)  A LITERACY AND LIBRARIES WEBINAR

ALA and the National Institute for Literacy are sponsoring a free webinar on Tuesday, April 7, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Pacific time. 8)  FEDERAL STIMULUS FUNDS FOR AT-RISK YOUTH

Gov. Chris Gregoire and Employment Security Commissioner Karen Lee announced today that $23 million in federal stimulus grants are being distributed throughout Washington to pay for summer employment and training programs for at-risk youths and young adults.
