Clippings, June 10, 2009

Visitors to the Richland Public Library should expect to spend extra time locating and checking out books today and Wednesday while the library installs a new automated system (Tri-City Herald [Kennewick], 5.19.09) http://www.tri-cityherald.com/kennewick_pasco_richland/story/583304.html

Tenino Timberland Library, a part of the Timberland Regional Library System, is looking for a special volunteer to serve on the library board. If interested in serving the community as a member of the library board, pick up an application at the Tenino Timberland Library and return by May 31st. (Tenino Independent, 5.20.09)

After spending $10 million during four years of planning, the vision of state officials for a majestic state Heritage Center is fading and its future existence in doubt as hard economic times forced reconsideration of the project. Although its future is uncertain, Gov. Gregoire downplayed any second guessing of the way the project has been handled so far. (Daily Journal of Commerce [Seattle], 5.28.09)

Buildings:

The $4 million Lake Hills Library (King County Library System, KCLS) breaks ground in Bellevue today. KCLS will hire its own general contractor to do the library interior, likely in February of 2010.  (Photo)  (Daily Journal of Commerce [Seattle], 5.20.09)

The King County Library System will not have to apply for a conditional use permit if it builds a new branch or expands its current one at Ober Park. According to the library system’s initial cost estimates, a new building at Ober Park was the most expensive option, while the costs of an expansion of the existing structure or its move to K2 were nearly equal. The Muckleshoot Library (King County Library System, KCLS) was completed on a fast-track, six-month schedule that allowed KCLS to open the library at the beginning of the summer, just as the school year was ending.  (Photo)  (Daily Journal of Commerce [Seattle], 5.21.09)

The Federal Way Regional Library (King County Library System, KCLS) is requesting bids to provide labor, materials, system service, roofing, cutting, patching, craning, electrical, gas piping and commissioning of equipment for HVAC replacement. (Daily Journal of Commerce [Seattle], 5.23.09)

The Coupeville Library (Sno-Isle Regional Library System) is accepting bids to construct a 3,400 square-foot addition, as well as remodel the existing library building.  Bid documents are available online starting May 26th. (Daily Journal of Commerce [Seattle], 5.23.09)

Letters and Editorials:

I do not use the library and you can count on my no vote for any new tax increases.  How about having the people who use the library services pay for them. (The Daily Herald [Everett], 5.17.09) http://www.heraldnet.com/article/20090517/OPINION02/705179953

The Sno-Isle Libraries want a levy increase, or they will reduce services and hours at our library. Have you looked at the Sno-Isle’s 2009 budget? (www.sno-isle.org) On page 13, you will find that the Sno-Isle Libraries paid their administrative team a total of $2,580,560 including benefits. I think Sno-Isle must do what the rest of us must: adjust to live within our incomes. (Stanwood Camano News, 5.19.09) http://www.scnews.com/news/2009/0519/letters/019.html

I wish that letter writers and others who are upset about a possible levy request from Sno-Isle Library System would attend one of the many community meetings about the subject. I thankfully haven’t had to use police or fire services, but I pay taxes for them too. There are certain services that are necessary and library access is one of them. Book Sales:

Help out by donating books, magazines, CDs, DVDs, and VHS tapes to the Bainbridge Public Library (Kitsap Regional Library).  Friend of the Library volunteers sort and price them and then sell them during three sales every month. The funds raised purchase books requested by the community and subscriptions for many of the magazines you find on the shelves.  (Bainbridge Island Review, 5.15.09) http://www.pnwlocalnews.com/kitsap/bir/opinion/letters/45103712.html

Economy/Hard Times:

Sno-Isle Libraries is asking for community input on a difficult decision. The library system will have a predicted deficit of about $2.5 million in 2010. Sno-Isle can either make cuts, or ask voters to approve a levy increase. If a levy increase is submitted to voters, it would be on the November general election ballot. (Stanwood Camano News, 5.19.09) http://www.scnews.com/news/2009/0519/front_page/005.html
