1) SEPT – OCT DATABASE TRIALS FOCUS ON CURRENT EVENTS

The Statewide Database Trials for September – October 2009 are now available. Trials will run through October 30, providing about six weeks to check out some interesting resources. This batch of trials focuses on “current events” resources, and includes some great information on government, controversial issues, world news, environmental and energy issues, and much more. Check them out at www.secstate.wa.gov/quicklinks/Trials09a.

Please remember when checking out these current events resources to take the time to fill out an Interest Form on those products you’d like to learn more about. By filling out these forms you also make it possible for us to arrange group purchases on products of interest and potentially save money for participating libraries. The interest form can be found at www.secstate.wa.gov/quicklinks/DBTrials2009InterestForm.

2) STATE LIBRARY EVENTS VIA STREAMING VIDEO

Many of Washington State Library’s series of events, evening and brown bag, are now available online via streaming video! Thanks to the hard work of WSL’s Multi-Media Services these are now available to view online.

Search the WSL catalog (www.secstate.wa.gov/library/catalog.aspx) using keywords ‘Educational Outreach Event’ and you will find a list of events to choose from. Many include a link to the flyer announcing the event. These and our upcoming events can also be found at: www.secstate.wa.gov/library/events.aspx.

Select from events such as “Looking Like the Enemy: My Story of Imprisonment in Japanese-American Internment Camps” with Mary Matsuda Gruenewald, “Mary Sam: Basket Weaver, Visionary, Provider, and Survivor” with Harvest Moon, “Tracking Kurt Cobain Through Washington Vital Records” with WSL Genealogy staff, or learn about Uppity Women, Lewis and Clark, Galloping Gertie, Ice Age Floods and many others.

For a week in October, the meeting room at WTBBL (Washington Talking Book & Braille Library) will be transformed into a gallery of tactile art created by patrons of the Library. The show is called “An Expression of Touch” and features art in many formats from both children and adult patrons. An opening reception will be held on Friday, October 16th from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. and then the art will be on display Monday – Friday, October 19 – 23, from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

If you are in Seattle, you are invited to the reception or to stop by and see the art during the week. The Washington Talking Book & Braille Library is located at 2021 9th Avenue, Seattle. For more information about WTBBL, visit: www.wtbbl.org.
