1) PUBLIC LIBRARIES SURVEY REPORT RELEASED

Public library visits and circulations per capita increased almost 20 percent between FY1999 and FY2008, while the number of public librarians per 25,000 people has remained virtually the same during that same period, according to the FY2008 Public Libraries Survey (PLS) report issued by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).

The PLS report, released in June, which includes information on population of service areas, service outlets, library collections and services, library staff, and operating revenue and expenditures, also found that Americans made 1.5 billion visits to public libraries in FY2008, up from 1.43 billion total visits the previous year. The report includes a number of key findings that will assist the library community and local, state, and national policymakers in making decisions to better their communities.

For the current and previous year reports, visit harvester.census.gov/imls/pubs/pls/.

2) WSL REFERENCE LIBRARIAN POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

The Office of the Secretary of State, Washington State Library Division, is recruiting for one permanent, full-time Reference Librarian (Library & Archival Professional 2).

This is a direct employment opportunity and the recruitment announcement may be viewed at: www.sos.wa.gov/office/employment.aspx; choose “Reference Librarian.” This position is currently funded by state general funds.

3) READER-FRIENDLY LIBRARY SERVICE

Join the Texas State Library for another free webinar Wednesday. All libraries want to put patrons at the heart of their service, but how do we make this a reality and not just an aspiration? Rachel Van Riel will talk about the reader-centered approach which Opening the Book has developed with libraries in the UK.

Moving beyond the concept of readers’ advisory, the reader-centered approach involves active intervention to open up reading choices, to offer opportunities to share reading experiences and to raise the status of reading as a creative act. This way of thinking has energized library staff across the UK to engage with their customers in new ways. Whether you work in policy making or on the library floor, you will find inspiration and practical ideas to make your library service truly reader-friendly.

Wednesday, July 14, 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. PDT. Register at www.tsl.state.tx.us/ld/workshops/webinars.

4) HOW TO INCREASE YOUR TIME, SPACE, AND COURAGE

You spend half of your waking hours at work. You want your work to make an impact and have a purpose beyond your salary. You want what you do to count. If you would like to do less busywork and more of the work that matters to you then this program provides a great starting point. This free American Management Association webcast explores a number of tools helping you focus on what matters, feel more engaged in your work, and find more meaning in your life. Full workshop title: “Do More Great Work: How to Increase Your Time, Space, and Courage.”

Wednesday, July 14, 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. PDT. For more information and to register, visit www.amanet.org/training/webcasts/Do-More-Great-Work.aspx.

5) MISSION INSPIRED GIFT FUNDRAISING

Learn about a new online fundraising model that world-class nonprofits in many sectors are using to raise millions of dollars online. Based on a giving catalog, the program presents supporters with mission-inspired options for giving. For example, at Operation Smile, an international health organization, their Holiday Gift Catalog allows supporters to donate $60 to purchase hospital gowns for 10 children who received surgical services from the charity; a $75 donation funds all the supplies necessary for one surgery. Join this free online meeting to get an inside look highlighting the strategy, program concepts, and best practices along with practical tips for implementing your own program.

Wednesday, July 14, 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. PDT. For more information and to register, follow this shortcut: www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/giving.

6) CREATING A HIGH PERFORMING WORKPLACE

Forget courses and curriculums. The future of learning is about online conversations and communities, podcasting on the go, and shared immersive-3D virtual-worlds experiences. A new breed of learners is entering the workforce with little patience for traditional Web 1.0 PowerPoint dronathons and e-learning drudgery. They want to be engaged, in control, and part of the storyline. Leading companies are turbocharging workplace performance with learning and communications that focus on doing, simulating, socializing, playing, sharing, and collaborating.

In this free Elluminate session, learn how leading companies are betting that the future of learning won’t be built on flat, static webpages but rather in traversable 3-D spaces: think Facebook meets Grand Theft Auto, or a Smurf Village reduction of your classroom. The full workshop title is “Creating a High Performing Workplace with Games, Social Media, and Virtual Worlds.”

Wednesday, July 14, 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. PDT. For more information and to register, use this shortcut: www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/workplace.

7) HELPING LEARNERS ACQUIRE MOTIVATION AND SKILLS

The growth and success of social learning and mobile learning are accompanied by a new type of learner-the “contributor.” Contributors create and share content and continuously interact with their informal groups. The challenge, however, is that learners-whether generation X,Y or silver-require a new set of skills and motivation to become active contributors.

This free Elluminate webinar will cover strategies and tactics that have proven effective in developing contributors. This session will also help trainers, eLearning designers and learning leaders understand new leader skills for implementing social learning and supporting the contributors.

Thursday, July 15, 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. PDT. For more information and to register, use this shortcut: www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/contributor.

  1. I was looking for information on Motivation and stumbled upon this post. It isn’t exactly what I was looking for, but I wanted to thank you for the information. It prompted me to look into Elluminate. I had not heard of it before so I had to research it. It looks like a great tool!
