1) DOWNLOADABLE AUDIOBOOKS RENEWAL & RECRUITMENT

The State Library’s Downloadable Audiobooks project provides unlimited use subscriptions to NetLibrary collections of eAudiobooks from Recorded Books, and to collections of single use titles. Libraries that did not participate this past year are encouraged to consider joining in 2011. A significant LSTA (Library Services & Technology Act) subsidy helps reduce costs for participating libraries.

The initial annual subscriptions expire at the end of March 2011, but will be renewed automatically unless libraries submit a cancellation form, indicating their intent not to continue. Cancellation forms are available on the project web site and should be submitted by March 28, 2011. For new libraries that wish to join, submit the intent to participate form and the order form (see below).

The cost for public and academic libraries will remain unchanged. For school libraries and school districts, the minimum cost will be $100.00 per invoice. For school entities whose original cost exceeds $100.00, there will be a 10% increase. For forms and additional information, visit the project web site at www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/join, or contact Will Stuivenga, Cooperative Projects Manager: [email protected], 360.704.5217, or toll free: 866.538.4996.

2) MANAGING REFERENCE SERVICE IN A SMALL LIBRARY

Reference service is a contact sport that engages both librarian and patron in a listening and learning process. WSL announces a free in-person reference workshop, Managing Reference Service in a Small Library. Sessions will be held around the state in a variety of locations in March, April, and June.

This highly interactive course will introduce participants to concepts and tools used in information access and delivery. Participants will study and discuss approaches to reference service; apply core reference principles and information technologies to the daily activities of library and information providers; and explore and analyze real-world reference issues relating to resource selection, user privacy, and confidentiality. The course is also designed to encourage library staff to update reference source materials and social networking tools and to provide participants with opportunities to interact with, and learn from, colleagues from a variety of libraries.

All workshops will be from 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Dates and locations for March workshops:

  • Monday, March 21; Port Angeles Library
  • Wednesday, March 23; Burlington Public Library
  • Thursday, March 24; Tacoma Public Library, Main Branch

Registration is required with a deadline one week prior to the event. To register, and to see a complete list of times and locations, visit www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/ref. Cancelations are required at least one week in advance to allow wait list attendees to participate and to arrange accurate catering for refreshments and lunch. For more information, please contact Jennifer Fenton, WSL CE/Training Coordinator at [email protected].

3) CELEBRATE PRESERVATION WEEK 2011

To increase awareness of the importance of preservation for both personal and library collections, ALA is encouraging libraries and other institutions to celebrate Preservation Week, April 24 – 30. Share your stories, create displays about preserving personal, family, or community heritage, or link to ALA’s Preservation Week resources.

4) SPRING AHEAD TO PREPARE FOR DISASTERS

FEMA (the Federal Emergency Management Agency) is encouraging all Americans to update their emergency preparedness plans as they spring ahead this weekend to Daylight Savings Time. They also suggest using this weekend to restock disaster kits and to become informed of local hazards.

One Response to “WSL Updates for March 10, 2011”

  1. Regarding item number 4: We just recently followed FEMA’s advice for putting together a emergency disaster kit (along with suggestions from Red Cross) and we are feeling pretty good about it. We live in Portland, and you can never be too prepared what with possible flooding, earthquakes and such :). Thanks for your post.
