1) SHARING THE JOY OF POETRY

Did you know that Washington has a Poet Laureate? Kathleen Flenniken, a lifelong Washington resident, has been appointed the 2012 – 2014 Washington State Poet Laureate, a position sponsored by Humanities Washington and the Washington State Arts Commission, with the support of Governor Chris Gregoire. The role of the Poet Laureate is to support and promote poetry in Washington through public readings, workshops, lectures, and presentations in communities, schools, colleges, universities, and other public settings throughout the state. Kathleen will be visiting all 39 counties in the state and welcomes requests from libraries to schedule poetry programs in their communities. To find out more about Washington’s Poet Laureate and to invite her to your library, visit washingtonpoetlaureate.org.

Kathleen also invites you to visit her blog, The Far Field, at kathleenflenniken.com/blog, featuring the work of other Pacific Northwest poets. Current residents of Washington State who would like their work considered for publication in The Far Field may submit up to five poems to the blog. Guidelines for submission may be found by visiting the blog’s “About” page.

2) WANTED – SEPTEMBER 18, 2009 ISSUE OF REDMOND REPORTER

The Washington State Library (WSL) microfilms Washington newspapers in accordance with its legal mandate to serve as a depository for them. WSL is preparing the Redmond Reporter for microfilming this month, but needs your help in finding an intact copy of the September 18, 2009 issue of this paper.

If your library happens to have this issue and would be willing to lend (or donate) it to WSL, please contact Leslie Boyter at [email protected] or 360.704.5220 by Monday, April 23, 2012. Thank you for your assistance!

3) SOCIAL MEDIA DEMYSTIFIED

Do you hear others talk about Tweeting and go, “Huh?” Are you confused by the new Facebook timeline? Is anyone still using MySpace? Come to the CAYAS Spring Webinar, “Social Media Demystified,” where presenter, Angela Nolet, will guide you through the hows and whys of popular social media tools and the new player on the block, Google+. She will also discuss how social media is being used in libraries. Best of all, specific questions about social media will be solicited in advance from those registered to attend, to enable Angela to tailor the webinar to your specific needs. By the end of the afternoon, you’ll Tweet, Like, and +1 like a pro!

4) TARGET EARLY CHILDHOOD READING GRANTS

Reading is essential to a child’s learning process. Every year, the Target Store Grant program awards Early Childhood Reading Grants to schools, libraries, and other nonprofit organizations to support programs such as afterschool reading events and weekend book clubs. Grants are intended to help foster a love of reading and to encourage children, preschool through third grade, to read with their families.
