1) LETTERS ABOUT LITERATURE – NATIONAL WINNERS

The Washington State Library is very pleased to announce that all three of Washington State’s Letters About Literature champions were chosen as national honor award recipients. Twelve national honor awards are given each year, four at each level, and Washington State won three of the twelve! This is the fifth (sixth and seventh) time in seven years that Washington has had a national winner in the Letters About Literature contest.

Read the three award-winning letters, see photos from the awards ceremony held on May 11, 2012, and find a link to the TVW recording of the awards ceremony by visiting www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/WaLAL2012.

2) CE GRANTS FOR STARTING STRONG

Each year, the Starting Strong Institute brings together members of Washington’s early learning community in a conference that facilitates the sharing of innovative ideas and strengthens the connections between early learning and K-12 professionals. Starting Strong 2012 will be held at the Hilton Vancouver Washington, from Tuesday, August 14, – Wednesday, August 15, 2012, and features two full days of speakers, breakout sessions, and panels. For more information about the conference, visit web3.esd112.org/startingstrong.

Librarians and support staff who need financial assistance to attend Starting Strong 2012 may apply for Continuing Education (CE) grants, provided they work ten or more hours per week (paid or volunteer) in a library or library consortia that is eligible to receive Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) funds. To provide additional support during these hard economic times, the Washington State Library is temporarily lowering the match for CE grants to 25%, and will cover the remaining 75% of eligible expenses. CE Grant applications must be postmarked no later than 30 days before the beginning of the conference. For additional information about CE Grants and to apply, visit www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/CE.

3) RESOURCE SHARING GRANT DEADLINE APPROACHING

The Connecting Libraries through Resource Sharing (CLRS) grant application cycle will close on Friday, June 1, 2012. The purpose of the Connecting Libraries through Resource Sharing (CLRS) grant cycle is to provide grant funds for collection development with materials that are rotated between partnering libraries, thus encouraging cooperation among public libraries in counties, or those with contiguous borders, where inter-local agreements to share materials do not exist, or did not exist before participation in a previous CLRS grant cycle.

Grants of up to $715 per library may be awarded qualifying partnerships. A single application from each group of partnering libraries is required. A partnership must include two or more public libraries; with one library acting as the lead library in both the application process and, if awarded, the grant implementation.

The application deadline is Friday, June 1, 2012. More details may be found at www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/grants. For additional information or questions, contact Carolyn Petersen, CLRS Project Manager, 360.570.5560, [email protected] or Anne Yarbrough, LSTA Grants Manager, 360.704.5246, [email protected].

4) WORKING TOGETHER TO MANAGE DISASTERS

If your institution had a disaster, how would you coordinate with your local first responders and other government agencies? Do you speak their language? Do you understand how your institution might work with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)? Knowing this information in advance could make all the difference in how quickly your institution is able to respond to, and recover from, a disaster event.

PDX Alliance for Response is excited to offer training in the first two modules of FEMA’s Incident Command System (ICS). The training will introduce you to the basic principles, structures, and terminology of the ICS and provide you with tools and knowledge to work seamlessly with other institutions and agencies when responding to a disaster.

Workshop information:

  • When: Wednesday, June 20, 2012, 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. PDT;
  • Where: Concordia University, 2811 Northeast Holman Street, Portland, OR
  • Registration: Free, but limited, so register soon to reserve your place! To register, go to www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/FEMA;
  • For additional information, contact Judith Norton, 503.494.3499.

5) GRANTS FOR LEARNING LABS

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is currently accepting applications for grants of up to $100,000 to support the planning and design of up to 30 Learning Labs in libraries and museums throughout the country. The Labs are intended to engage middle- and high-school youth in mentor-led, interest-based, youth-centered, collaborative learning using digital and traditional media. Grantees will be required to participate, in-person and online, in a community of practice that will provide technical assistance, networking, and cross-project learning. Projects are expected to provide prototypes for the field and be based on current research about digital media and youth learning.

A pre-application webinar will be held on Wednesday, May 23, 2012, from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. PDT. The deadline to submit grant applications is Friday, June 15, 2012. For additional information visit www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/liblab2012.
