1) FIRST TUESDAYS – INSTITUTIONAL LIBRARY SERVICES

Institutional Library Services (ILS) provides on-site library services to inmates and patients in Washington State’s larger institutions. The ILS Libraries have been described by patrons as an oasis of welcoming hope. Outreach is also provided to several prison camps throughout the state. In addition to providing a wide variety of materials for education and leisure, the library collections and staff are dedicated to providing materials for mental wellness and re-entry skills.

2) SHARE YOUR SUCCESSES AT WALE

Program proposals are still being accepted for the 2012 WALE (Washington Library Employees) Conference, Coming of Age … 21 Years as an Interest Group, which will be held at the renovated Campbell’s Resort on Lake Chelan on October 29 – 31. Is there a system, program, or resource that works really well for your library? Show others how to do it, too. Or partner with staff from other libraries to demonstrate multiple approaches to common issues. Or just ask your favorite presenter or instructor to submit a proposal.

3) REGISTER NOW FOR NWILL 2012

Registration is now open for the 11th Northwest Interlibrary Loan and Resource Sharing Conference (NWILL 2012). This year’s conference, Delivering on the Discovery Expectation, promises to be an exciting one and will feature Stephen Abram as keynote speaker. Sessions include:

  • “The Real Cost of ILL” presented by Lars Leon;
  • “Delivering on User Expectations in a One-Click World” presented by Joanne Percy;
  • “Patron-driven E-Book Initiative by the Orbis Cascade Alliance” presented by Greg Doyle.

NWILL 2012 will take place September 13 – 14, 2012, at Portland Community College, Sylvania Campus, Portland, Oregon. Scholarships are available for four attendees; Continuing Education (CE) grants are also available from the Washington State Library. 4) LOVE HISTORIC THEATERS? THERE’S A LIBRARY FOR YOU!

The Seattle Theatre Group had a vision – to develop a historic theater library for the Paramount, Moore, and Neptune Theatres in Seattle. On Thursday, March 1, 2012, this vision became a reality with the dedication of the Seattle Theatre Group Historic Theatres Library in Seattle. Volunteers devoted nearly 4,000 hours to tackle the massive job of gathering, sorting, documenting, cataloging, and preserving over 100 years of historical data!

The objective of the Seattle Theatre Group Historic Theatres Library is three-fold:

  • To ensure that historical material from all three theaters is properly preserved and documented for future generations;
  • To provide an educational environment for youth so that they are able to learn about and experience firsthand the remarkable history of the theaters;
  • To offer the community a setting in which they may become better acquainted with the history, and develop a deeper understanding, of three of the few remaining historic theaters in Seattle.

5) OCLC REPORTS – LIBRARIES NOW AND IN THE FUTURE

What are the priorities for today’s libraries? What will the future hold for them? In mid-2011, OCLC conducted a study of U.S. public, academic, and community college libraries. Newly released reports providing the results from those studies reveal what librarians see as their top priorities, what they think their physical library spaces will look like in 5 years, and what role evolving tools and resources, like eBooks and social media, play in their current and future priorities.
