1) FIRST TUESDAYS – WASHINGTON RURAL HERITAGE DIGITAL COLLECTIONS

Have you heard about WSL’s Washington Rural Heritage project? Would you like to know more? Join us at the next First Tuesdays program, Exploring Washington Rural Heritage Digital Collections, as WSL’s Evan Robb and Ross Fuqua provide an overview of the project, discuss participation and grant opportunities, and give an introduction to searching, browsing, and exploring Washington Rural Heritage, a digital repository for Washington’s public libraries. The presentation will demonstrate advanced search functionality, website navigation, and integration of social media and collection visualization components. 3) PUBLIC INPUT NEEDED ON EARLY LEARNING

Earlier this year, the Washington Early Learning Partnership, which includes the Department of Early Learning, the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, and Thrive by Five Washington, launched the Washington Early Learning State and Local Coordination Project to explore ways in which the state’s early learning system could be strengthened through coordination to make it more accessible, accountable, and developmentally and culturally appropriate. After conducting community research that included interviews and focus groups with 150 stakeholders across the state, the project conducted an online survey, inviting comments from everyone who had reviewed the summary of the research findings. Comments were used in the development of preliminary recommendations.

The project began a second round of public outreach on November 20, asking for review and comments on the preliminary recommendations. There are two options for review and response:

  • Tier 1: For members of the public and those less directly involved in the early learning system, and/or who have less time to review the materials. The tier 1 document is a less detailed overview of the preliminary recommendations;
  • Tier 2: For stakeholders who have substantial direct involvement in the early learning system serving children and families from birth to third grade, including libraries, coalitions involved in early learning (e.g., Early Learning Regional Coalitions), and the Tribal Early Learning Coalition. Tier 2 includes more details about the preliminary recommendations.

4) PLA SEEKING FEEDBACK ON DIGITAL LEARNING CENTER

The Public Library Association (PLA) is partnering with ALA’s Office for Information Technology Policy (OITP) and the Chief Officers of State Library Agencies (COSLA) to develop a Digital Learning Center that would make accessible an online collection of digital literacy resources to libraries, patrons, and other community-based organizations. The grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) that is making this possible will also support the development of training curricula in English and Spanish, technology trainer competencies, handouts, and patron skills assessment tools.

To identify teaching practices and top resources for digital literacy learning, PLA is asking library professionals and community educators to share their insights and experience with digital literacy efforts by taking a brief survey. 5) FREE WORKSHOP – FUNDING PRESERVATION PROJECTS

Would you like to receive a preservation grant to help take care of your collections? Many institutions have used grant-funded projects to enhance the level of care they can provide for their collections, and sometimes even to jump start their preservation programs.

“Creating and Funding Preservation Projects to Enhance Collection Care” is a free, one-day workshop with an emphasis on small-to-medium sized institutions without preservation grant writing experience. Participants will work collaboratively with colleagues to develop and receive feedback on project proposals and, by the end of the workshop day, will have:

  • Outlined a preservation project proposal specific to their institutions;
  • Identified possible funding sources;
  • Tested their ideas with other workshop participants.

Workshop information:

  • When: Friday, December 7, 2012, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.;
  • Where: Springfield Public Library, Springfield, Oregon;
