1) LOCAL HISTORIAN SOLVES TERRITORIAL LIBRARY PUZZLE!

Last week, readers of the Washington State Library (WSL) blog, Between the Lines, were asked if they could help identify the ship that brought the first shipment of books purchased by Isaac Stevens for Washington’s Territorial Library from New York City to San Francisco in 1853. Although the story of the Tarquinia, the ship that brought the books from San Francisco to Olympia, is well known, the details surrounding the first leg of the books’ journey had been lost in the mists of time.

But the mystery was no match for the talents of Rich Edwards, a retired WSL Program Manager for Technical Services and now serving as the Historian for the South Thurston County Historical Society. He accepted the challenge and was able to prove that the ship was the Invincible, which left New York on Saturday, May 21, 1853, and arrived in San Francisco 110 days later, on Friday, September 9, 1853. Irrefutable evidence was found on page 2 of the September 26, 1853 issue of the Daily Alta California, among the Consignee Notices:

“Consignees of the following goods, per ship Invincible, from New York, are hereby notified that if not called for on or before Monday, the 26th inst, sufficient of the same will be sold to pay freight and charges: … Thirty-two cases books, marked Gen. J. J. [sic] Stevens, Olympia: Washington Territory, shipped by C.B. Norton, consigned to Major R. P. Hammond.”

 The journey was not without mishap. According to the September 10, 1853 issue of the Daily Alta California, the Invincible “[m]ade the run to Cape Horn in 48 days, when where [sic] we experienced heavy gales for 23 days; lost main yard, sails, &c. Crossed the Equator Aug 16th, long 118 39, since which time have had a succession of light N NE and NE winds.” The paper then states, “The ship Invincible has hauled into Cunningham’s wharf.”

Thanks to Rich Edwards, WSL’s 160th anniversary celebration is off to a great start! Be a part of the celebration and discover the State Library’s hidden history Between the Lines at blogs.sos.wa.gov/library.

2) IPAD TABLET LAB GRANT CYCLE NOW OPEN

The purpose of the iPad Tablet Lab grant cycle is to provide iPad tablet training labs, each consisting of 10 Apple iPad tablets, a Bretford PowerSync charging tray, and covers for each tablet, to 15 qualifying libraries in state-funded K-12 schools and/or community and technical colleges in Washington State. The training labs may be used to support a variety of trainings and other library services including, but not limited to, providing educational support and access to online resources.

Awarding of grants will be weighted to ensure equitable geographic disbursement of labs across the state. Potential awardees should have the ability to use and maintain the equipment. For K-12 schools, preference will be given to schools with the highest level of participation in the USDA National School Lunch Program (NSLP). This grant cycle is supported with Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) funds and includes the purchase of equipment that provides access to the Internet. All qualifying K-12 schools in Washington State that can provide certification of compliance with the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) may apply. CIPA certification is not required for participation by community and technical college applicants.

For grant guidelines and the application form, go to sos.wa.gov/q/iLab. Grant applications are due Friday, July 12, 2013.

3) TURNING THE PAGE – LIBRARIES BUILDING COMMUNITIES

The Public Library Association’s successful Turning the Page program is coming to Washington State. This fall, starting September 9, members of the Washington library community will join members of the Idaho library community to participate in this six-week online series, which takes participants through the steps of developing an advocacy plan. In addition, participants will learn about the OCLC Geek the Library program, which provides assistance for libraries to implement their action plans.

Group registration is available and libraries are encouraged to involve multiple staff in the program. Due to the nature of this training, registration will be limited to the first 20 libraries in Washington that apply. For additional information, go to www.libraries.idaho.gov/turning-page. Questions? Contact Jennifer Fenton, [email protected].

5) FREE WORKSHOP – FUNDING PRESERVATION PROJECTS

Would you like to receive a preservation grant to help take care of your collections? Many institutions have used grant-funded projects to enhance the level of care they can provide for their collections, and sometimes even to jump start their preservation programs.

“Creating and Funding Preservation Projects to Enhance Collection Care” is a free, one-day workshop with an emphasis on small-to-medium sized institutions without preservation grant writing experience. Participants will work collaboratively with colleagues to develop and receive feedback on project proposals and, by the end of the workshop day, will have:

  • Outlined a preservation project proposal specific to their institutions;
  • Identified possible funding sources;
  • Tested their ideas with other workshop participants.

Workshop information:

  • When: Thursday, August 1, 2013, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.;
  • Where: Oregon Historical Society, Portland, Oregon;
  • Instructor: Barclay Ogden;
