New polls show Eyman’s I-1033 well ahead

New polls show Eyman’s I-1033 well ahead

If Referendum 71, the public vote on the new “everything but marriage” domestic partnership law, looks like a close call, new polls show that Washington’s other statewide ballot measure, Initiative 1033, is sailing well ahead of its opposition. Rasmussen Reports, in a statewide phone poll conducted Sept. 22 among 500 likely voters, shows 61 percent definitely or probably in favor of I-1033, 31 percent definitely or probably against and 8 percent not sure.  The independent Elway Poll also put it…

R-71 update: Hundreds of signatures move into “accepted” pile after recheck

R-71 update: Hundreds of signatures move into “accepted” pile after recheck

As Dave Ammons mentioned in his blog post yesterday, the Referendum 71 signature checkers have been doing a “recent registration check” for signatures that had been rejected because they weren’t found in the copy of the state voter database used for checking signatures. R-71 Wednesday update: Tally now tops 48,000

Election crews have now posted the latest Referendum 71 signature-check results, adding over 15,000 checked signatures, pushing the total to over 48,000. The tally now includes 43,147 signatures accepted and 5,142 rejected, with a slightly higher rejection rate of 10.65 percent. A number of bound volumes, with 15 petition sheets per batch, were completed by the master checkers and added to the running total.   The signature rejections were mostly due to the person not being found on the statewide voter registration database…

Who signs R-71? Foes may post it online

Some foes of a referendum aimed at halting a new “everything but marriage” law in Washington state plan to eventually publish online the names and addresses of everyone who signs the Referendum 71 petitions. The state Elections Division is encouraging “civil debate” on the measure and expressing concern if the signature-gathering process is suppressed or voters feel threatened in any way. Washington Values Alliance, which opposes gay marriage and is sponsoring R-71, will begin circulating petitions this week. They’ll be racing…

Domestic partnership foes file referendum

Domestic partnership foes file referendum

Opponents of Washington’s new “everything but marriage” domestic partnership law are hoping to force a statewide public vote on the issue this fall. Larry Stickney, Arlington, president of Washington Values Alliance (Web site here), filed a referendum at the state Elections Division in Oly on Monday.  Sponsors will have until July 25 to gather 120,577 valid voter signatures to qualify for the November 3 statewide ballot. Referendum 71 would allow voters to uphold the new law, Senate Bill 5688, or to reject it. Governor…
