1) THE KIDS ARE NOT ALL WHITE FIRST TUESDAYS WEBINAR
The kids are not all white presented by Edith Campbell, Cunningham Memorial Library, Indiana State University, on August 4, 2015 from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. PDT
Some 43% of Millennial adults are non-white and the U.S. Census Bureau projects that the full U.S. population will be a majority of non-whites around 2043. Kidlit publishers do not reflect these population dynamics. Do library shelves and programs? All young readers need mirrors and windows that both reflect and open the world around them. Library materials and programs are important in helping children make cross-cultural connections and develop the skills necessary to function in a pluralistic society. Resources are readily available for librarians to meet these needs.

2) EXPLORING TECHNOLOGY: ET KITS GRANT CYCLE OPEN
Exploring Technology: ET kits grant cycle from the Washington State Library (WSL) is open. The purpose of this grant cycle is to empower libraries as exploration centers for youth.
This grant cycle enables public and tribal libraries to apply for a Mindstorm Lego® Robotics kit or an Eggbot Robotics kit. WSL expects youth will increase their science, technology, engineering, and math skills through interaction with the kits. The contents of the Mindstorm Lego® Robotics kit and the Eggbot Robotics kits can be found in the third section of the grant guidelines.
- Grant guidelines and the application forms.
- Questions? There will be a webinar for interested applicants on Tuesday, August 11, 2015 at 9:00 a.m. PDT. Project Manager Carolyn Petersen [email protected] or Maura Walsh at [email protected] can also be emailed for questions.
This grant cycle is made possible through funding provided to the Washington State Library by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

4) RETURN TO RELEVANCE WEBINAR REGISTRATION OPEN
Return to Relevance: Including and Unleashing Everyone in Shaping the Future — In this roll-up-your-sleeves virtual workshop series, we will gain clarity on the relevance and purpose of our work together in libraries. We will introduce and immediately apply Liberating Structures–methods designed to include and unleash everybody in shaping next steps. Themes to be explored may include: attracting more patrons; generating and broadcasting an exciting library narrative; support of early learning; and bridging the digital divide. We will make fast progress on problems facing libraries and librarians while learning a new approach to handle any challenge that arises. The three-part series will be practical and seriously playful for all levels of library staff and management. Teams or small groups are encouraged, however, individual participation also works.
- Webinars facilitated by Nancy White, Full Circle Associates, and Keith Candless, Liberating Structures.
- The final webinar is September 14, 2015.
- Each free webinar is 90 minutes from 8:30 – 10:00 a.m. and will be archived.
- Log-in instructions will be emailed to all registered participants. Register here.
Sponsored by Washington State Library through funds from the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) through the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA).
