1) LCW NEEDS SPECIAL LIBRARIES REPRESENTATIVE

Applications are still being accepted for one Library Council of Washington position representing Special Libraries. Applications must be postmarked by Friday, July 29, 2011, to be considered. The term for this position is anticipated to begin in November 2011.

2) E-BOOK READER PILOT PROJECT

Beginning July 5, the Washington State Library will accept applications from libraries interested in participating in one of two pilot projects oriented around the use of eBook readers in Washington libraries. One project will be centered on training library staff to become familiar and comfortable with eBook readers. The other project involves libraries developing policies and procedures as they experiment with circulating eBook readers. Libraries may only apply to participate in one project.

3) WEBJUNCTION WASHINGTON UPDATE

WebJunction is changing again. One of the huge benefits of the new WebJunction is that, beginning on July 1, 2011, Washington affiliates will be able to take unlimited courses for free! In addition to free unlimited courses, a new feature, “enhanced webinars,” will be introduced later in the year. 4) COMMUNITY PREPAREDNESS DAY AWARDS

The National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Pacific Northwest Region, is pleased to announce a round of funding for Community Preparedness Day Awards, which assist libraries in becoming active partners in emergency preparedness, response, and recovery planning activities in their communities. A maximum of two awards of up to $5,000 each are available to NN/LM member organizations in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington.

The goals of Community Preparedness Day are to:

  • Encourage, strengthen and/or expand library partnerships with first responders and community emergency management personnel;
  • Provide access to emergency management information tools and resource for families or other target populations;
  • Integrate and involve libraries in emergency preparedness, response, and recovery planning;
  • Promote and publicize the roles libraries, faith, or community organizations can play in emergency preparedness;
  • Strengthen and expand medical and public library partnerships.

5) LIVE LONG AND PROSPER

The Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Washington Board is now accepting proposals for the ACRL Washington and Oregon Joint Fall Conference, Live long and prosper: Sustainable solutions for today’s academic libraries. Academic libraries are facing a challenging future with evolving information technologies, growing user needs, increasing operational costs, and unstable financial situations. In order to thrive and grow, social, economic, and environmental sustainability must be embraced.

Sessions may address any and all aspects of academic librarianship relating to:

  • Collections/Liaison Work;
  • Reference/Instruction;
  • Outreach/Advocacy;
  • Marketing/Public Relations;
  • Partnerships/Collaborations;
  • Assessment/Strategic Planning.

Sessions will be approximately 60 minutes long, except for the 10-minute “lightning talks.” Sessions may take the form of presentations, workshops, discussions, panel discussions, or lightning talks.
