1) RFP FOR SERIALS SUBSCRIPTION AGENT

The Washington State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State, announces the release of a Request for Proposals (RFP) for a subscription agent to handle the purchase, coordination, and upkeep of periodical subscriptions for the Central Library in Olympia and twelve branches throughout Washington.

2) PRISONERS CONTACTING PUBLIC LIBRARIES

Occasionally state correctional center inmates send requests for materials or information directly to public libraries. Please refer inmate requests from prisons with Washington State Library branches to [email protected] or contact her at 360.704.5250. We will assist the inmate in finding materials and information. The prisons with WSL branches are:

3) MOVING AHEAD WHEN THERE’S NO MONEY IN THE BUDGET

Feeling challenged by tough times? Find inspiration and fresh ideas at the 2012 LLOPS (Law Librarians of Puget Sound) Professional Development Day, “Moving Ahead When There’s No Money in the Budget: delivering information, developing skills, and serving the community in tough times.” Speakers include:

• Tracey Burrows and Joe Levan from the Municipal Research Services Center (MRSC) describing the work done by the MRSC, resources available to the public, and trends in the state’s public sector;
• Eura Szuwalski from WTBBL (Washington Talking Book & Braille Library) discussing how to find free or low cost continuing education activities;
• Gary Davis from Companis sharing how to find and use volunteer opportunities to build your resume;
• Austin Jenkins from KUOW and Peter Callaghan from the Tacoma News Tribune reviewing the most recent legislative session;
• Bruce Harrell, Seattle City Councilmember, talking about how local governments move from ideas to policies to legislation, and how budget pressures can affect the process.

Conference information:

• When: Wednesday, March 14, 2012, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.;
• Where: Seattle University School of Law Annex, 1215 E Columbia Street, Seattle;

4) DIGITAL CONTINUITY – CALL FOR PAPERS

Although knowledge is today primarily created and accessed through digital media, it is highly ephemeral and its disappearance could lead to the impoverishment of humanity. Despite the adoption of the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) Charter on the Preservation of Digital Heritage in 2003, there is still insufficient awareness of the risks of loss of digital heritage.

UNESCO will be holding a conference, “The Memory of the World in the Digital Age: Digitization and Preservation,” that will bring together professionals from the heritage sectors, as well as a range of government, IT industry, rights holders, and other stakeholders to assess current policies in order to propose practical recommendations to ensure permanent access to digital documentary heritage. It is hoped that the Conference will lead to:

• The launch of specific initiatives related to digital preservation and to the fostering of access to documentary heritage through digitization;
• The upgrading or revision of the UNESCO Charter on the Preservation of Digital Heritage;
• The identification of the legal frameworks that would facilitate long-term digital preservation;
• The agreement on the promotion or development of exchange standards;
• The definition of the respective roles of professions, academics, industry, and governments in addressing various issues and devising a model for their cooperation.

Prospective speakers are invited to submit abstracts of proposed presentations related to original work or research findings/recommendations related to the following challenges to digital continuity:

• Technological;
• Legal and ethical;
• Economic;
• Political;
• Cultural and professional.

5) SERVING DEAF PATRONS IN THE LIBRARY

Gain an understanding of Deaf culture, learn several useful library-related signs, and be ready to work confidently with interpreters for your library programs by attending the two-part webinar, “Serving Deaf Patrons in the Library.” Kathy MacMillan, American Sign Language interpreter, writer, librarian, and storyteller, will guide you in making your library a welcoming place for deaf people.

This two-part workshop will cover the following topics:

• Overview of the different ways deaf people communicate;
• Understanding and meeting your library’s legal obligation to serve the deaf;
• Strategies for communicating with a deaf or hard of hearing person in the library;
• Tips for finding, hiring, and working with interpreters.
