1) SMARTPHONE APP ADVISORY COMMITTEE CALL
The WSL Library Development Program is exploring foundation funding for the development of a statewide smartphone application that would connect smartphone users directly to their libraries. We need input from libraries as to which features and capabilities should be included. Please consider volunteering to serve on the project advisory committee. Committee member travel expenses will be covered; members should expect one face-to-face meeting in October, after which business will be conducted online. Please indicate your interest no later than Friday, September 28, 2012, by contacting Carolyn Petersen at [email protected] or 360.570.5560 or Will Stuivenga at [email protected] or 360.704.5217.

3) ARE YOU READY?
Okay, now you have a disaster response plan, but do you know how well it will work in a real disaster? It’s better to find out now rather than after a disaster has occurred! Put your plan to the test at Are You Ready? Scenario Planning & Collaboration Among Heritage Institutions to Improve Disaster Preparedness for Collections, free workshops funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, where participants will test their institutions’ disaster plans to identify areas for improvement, improve their own ability to evaluate risks, and work together with other participants to build a shared vision for regional disaster preparedness. The workshop instructor is Gary Menges, Librarian Emeritus, University of Washington, and WESTPAS trainer.
Two workshops in the state of Washington have been scheduled for the month of October:
- Wednesday, October 10, 2012, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., Olympic Room, Tacoma Public Library; pre-registration required no later than Monday, October 8, 2012, at 5:00 p.m.; for additional information and to register, go to www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/RUReadyTacoma;
- Wednesday, October 24, 2012, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., Everett Public Library; pre-registration required no later than Monday, October 22, 2012, at 5:00 p.m.; for additional information and to register, go to www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/RUReadyEverett.

4) SMALL AND/OR RURAL?
In the coming year, ALA is looking for ways to expand its professional development offerings on library programming for small and rural libraries through its Programming Librarian web site: www.programminglibrarian.org. If you work in a small and/or rural library, please consider taking the brief (5-minute) survey at www.surveymonkey.com/s/ARSL to provide feedback on the types of topics that would be of the most value for you and your community.
