1) EVERYONEON IS HERE – HAVE YOU GOTTEN YOUR TOOLKIT?

EveryoneOn, a 3-year campaign to help the millions of Americans who do not have the digital literacy skills they need to succeed, is literally putting libraries on the map as valuable digital literacy resources in their communities. A zip code search tool on the EveryoneOn web site can help users find free computer and internet training classes in their area, including those available at local public libraries. The site also includes information on computer basics, job searching, accessing government resources, and how to connect with friends and family.

The goal of the EveryoneOn campaign is to help. Whether it’s finding a job, helping their children complete homework for school, or connecting with distant family, every American needs access to the tools that will help them to succeed. Libraries continue to be seen as providing an essential service to their communities by making available computer and information literacy training those who need it. They can build heightened awareness about this role to members of their communities by taking advantage of the free promotional tools available to them through EveryoneOn including:

• Tips on using campaign materials and spreading the word;
• Downloadable posters and graphics;
• Links to webinars aimed at stakeholders.

2) FIRST TUESDAYS – TAKE THIS JOB AND SHELVE IT!

See your library’s potential in a new way at the next First Tuesdays program, Take this job and shelve it!, where Brianna Hoffman and Daurice Siller from the Richland Public Library will offer a fresh look at libraries from the page/shelver perspective. Join this lively session and discover new strategies for:

• Departmental organization;
• Space planning;
• Training staff, volunteers, and patrons.

By learning how to empower your pages/shelvers during the planning process, you empower your library in return!

This free web presentation will take place on April 2, 2013, from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. PST. First Tuesdays are designed as a continuing education opportunity for staff of libraries in Washington State, providing attendees with the opportunity to share their skills and successes and learn about new topics. 3) GET YOUR CAMERAS READY FOR SNAPSHOT DAY

Grab your cameras and share a day in the life of all types of libraries – school, academic, public, special, institutional – during Washington Library Snapshot Day from April 7 – 20, 2013. Just select a typical day during this week to shine a light on services, collect patron comments, and gather snapshots of what goes on in your library. This is the ultimate do-it-yourself library advocacy event and you can make it as simple or involved as you like. By marking the day, Snapshot hopes to compile comments, photos, videos, and any data “snapshots” into a statewide picture of the health and vitality of libraries in our communities and educational institutions.

4) CELEBRATE PRESERVATION WEEK WITH FREE WEBINARS

Events celebrating the fourth annual Preservation Week (April 21 – 27, 2013) will be held across the country at academic, public, and special libraries. Activities will include lectures, presentations, demonstrations, and workshops, as well as three free webinars:

• April 23 – The Preservation of Family Photographs;
• April 24 – Personal Digital Archiving;
• April 25 – Archival 101: Dealing with Suppliers of Archival Products.

5) PAID PRESERVATION INTERNSHIP FOR GRADUATE STUDENT

George Blood Audio and Video is a leading provider of audiovisual and moving image preservation and digitization services, reformatting more than 1,000 hours of recordings on decaying and obsolete media to a variety of digital formats every month. Their clients consist of libraries, museums, archives, and private collectors, both nationally and internationally.

For the summer of 2013, George Blood Audio and Video is offering a 6 – 8 week paid internship to a graduate student currently working towards a degree in archival science, preservation, library/information science, or a similar area of study. The intern will gain an understanding of the processes of audiovisual preservation reformatting, and will have the opportunity to contribute to a particular area of preservation work of their choosing.
