1) GAINING STEAM WORKSHOPS ADDED

Washington State Library announces additional Gaining STEAM workshops – a Lego Mindstorms EV3® experience. Due to popular demand, two more Gaining STEAM workshops have been scheduled:

Gaining STEAM workshops are offered as a hands-on 6-hour robotics building and programming workshop to prepare library staff to host programs in their communities. The workshops are for beginners; no previous robotics or programming experience is needed. Library staff from all types of libraries are welcome.

Starting in May 2016, the Lego Mindstorms EV3® kits used for this training will be offered for circulation to public and tribal libraries around the state. Details on how to reserve the kits for local library programs will be announced later this spring.

Our goal is to provide useful and fun Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) training for library staff throughout the state. Gaining STEAM is an outreach program provided by the Washington State Library in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). It provides another tool to enrich Washington State communities through the libraries that serve them.

2) SUPERCHARGED STORYTIMES – THE VIEWS2 WAY

You already provide great storytimes. Supercharge them and make them even better!

After several years of research, forty fearless librarians, working with Project VIEWS2 researchers and a small army of UW iSchool students under the guidance of the late Dr. Eliza T. Dresang, were able to demonstrate that public library storytimes really do make a difference when early literacy principles are intentionally incorporated into their delivery. Find out for yourself by attending one of the upcoming free Supercharged Storytimes workshops that will demonstrate how to supercharge your storytimes with research-based tools and techniques that will make your programs:

  • More fun;
  • More creative;
  • Easier to plan; and
  • More effective in helping children learn to read.

These free workshops will be held in the following locations during the first two weeks of May 2016:

  • Monday, May 2:           Timberland Regional Library, Tumwater branch;
  • Tuesday, May 3:           Camas Public Library;
  • Thursday, May 5:          Anacortes Public Library;
  • Friday, May 6:              Kitsap Regional Library, Scout Hall (across from Silverdale branch);
  • Monday, May 9:           Richland Public Library;
  • Tuesday, May 10:         Yakima Valley Libraries, Sunnyside branch;
  • Thursday, May 12:        Spokane County Library District, Argonne branch (Spokane);
  • Friday, May 13:            Neill Public Library, Pullman.

3) COOL CREATIONS COMEBACK

Public and tribal libraries, are you interested in having the Cool Creations Legos® kits visit or re-visit your library?

The Cool Creations Legos® kits are a STEAM activity sponsored by the Washington State Library.

4) SERVING DIVERSE COMMUNITIES ONLINE COURSE

Highline College Library & Information Services Program is offering:

  • LIBR 132 “Serving Diverse Communities” online for five credits during spring 2016.
  • The course is an examination of library services to diverse populations including, but not limited to, ethnicity, national origin, language, gender, age, disability (human exceptionalities) and sexual orientation.
  • The course focuses on proactively developing collections and services that foster an atmosphere of inclusion and meet the needs of all the library’s users.

5) WALE CONFERENCE PROPOSALS WANTED

Program proposals are now being accepted for the 2016 WALE Conference, to be held October 24-26, 2016 in beautiful Chelan, Washington. This is the 25th annual event for the Washington Library Employees (WALE), an interest group of the Washington Library Association.

All proposals from library staff, advocates, and partner organizations will be considered. Please reach out to local dynamic presenters or share your own skills and experience by leading a Conference Session or a Preconference Workshop.

  • Proposals are due no later than Friday, April 8, 2016.
  • Primary Contacts will be notified of proposal status by Friday, April 22, 2016.
  • All Preconference Workshops will be held Monday, October 24, 2016.
  • All Conference Sessions will be held Tuesday, October 25, 2016.
