2) JOB ANNOUNCEMENT – TECHNOLOGY CONSULTANT

The Office of the Secretary of State, Washington State Library is recruiting for a permanent, full-time Technology Consultant (Information Technology Specialist 3).

The Library Development Program is seeking an enthusiastic, analytical, and collaborative person to serve as a resource to individual libraries statewide on a wide range of critical IT related issues. The Technology Consultant will provide:

  • Help desk services to libraries across the state,
  • Monitoring of libraries connected to the statewide K-20 Educational Network;
  • Consultancy on information technology and the federal E-Rate program;
  • Server administration for centralized services to libraries;
  • Development and delivery of technology training, and;
  • IT support for Library Service and Technology Act (LSTA) funded initiatives and projects.

3) BROADBAND STIMULUS FUNDING WIKI

The Washington State Library has recently created a Broadband Stimulus Funding Wiki which is based on an ongoing survey of libraries within Washington State.

The wiki provides specific information on libraries:

  1. Applying or participating in an application for broadband stimulus funding;
  2. Those who are interested in applying or being part of an application but have not yet found the desired approach or partners; and
  3. Those who are not interested in applying at this time.

The wiki is located at wiki.secstate.wa.gov/broadband/. The Participating Libraries section of the wiki (wiki.secstate.wa.gov/broadband/Libraries.ashx) provides a quick visual overview of how libraries that have responded to the survey are positioned. Contact and other information for the libraries is found by following the library name links.

4) GALE ACADEMIC DATABASE GROUP PURCHASE RENEWAL

The Washington State Library Statewide Database Licensing Project and Gale | Cengage Learning are pleased to announce the annual renewal of the academic Gale database package group purchase. In recognition of current economic conditions, Gale has announced a zero price increase for the current renewal year. Renewing libraries should have already received invoices from Gale; payment of the invoice to Gale indicates the library’s intent to renew.

All academic libraries in Washington, including technical and community college libraries, are eligible to participate in this group purchase. Details, including pricing, may be found on the SDL web site: www.secstate.wa.gov/quicklinks/Gale1. Since pricing has not changed, last year’s forms are still applicable. 5) WLMA CONFERENCE IN OCTOBER

“Catch the Information Express! Connect, Engage, Inspire” is the theme for the 2009 Washington Library Media Association Annual Conference, to be held in Yakima, October 8-10. As teacher-librarians and school library programs become even more integral to student success, the program at this year’s conference offers speakers, sessions, workshops and collegiality to support this endeavor.

6) FUNDS FOR NATIVE LANGUAGE PRESERVATION PROJECTS

The purpose of the Native Voices Endowment: A Lewis & Clark Expedition Bicentennial Legacy Project, administered by the Endangered Language Fund, is to revitalize and perpetuate the aboriginal languages of the American Indian Nations whose ancestors encountered the 1803-1806 Lewis & Clark Expedition.

Support is provided for Native language education programs, curricula, or projects; individual study by Native language students; and research efforts to document and record a Native language for future preservation and education. Grants range from $2,000 to $10,000, and require a 1:1 match. The application deadline is October 15, 2009.
