5) PUBLIC LIBRARIANS IN TECHNICAL SERVICES – E-FORUM DISCUSSION
Technical Services careers in public libraries are similar to technical services in academic and other types of libraries and yet different from them. This forum is intended to be a two-day discussion where the following topics, as well as others can be addressed:
- What are the career options for librarians that want to work in technical services in public libraries?
- What are some of unique aspects of technical services librarianship in public libraries? How does it differ from academic and other types of libraries?
- What are ways librarians can prepare for a career in technical services in public libraries? How have participants come to their career path?
- What are some of the challenges faced by technical services librarians in public libraries?
- How can the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) help support public librarians in technical services?
Please join ALCTS for this e-forum discussion from Feb. 23-24, 2010. It’s free and open to everyone! The e-forum starts at 6 a.m. PST and runs until 5 p.m. PST each day. The forum will be moderated by Marlene Harris and Cheryl Nakaji.
An ALCTS e-forum provides an opportunity for librarians to discuss matters of interest, led by a moderator, through the e-forum discussion list. The e-forum discussion list works like an email listserv: register your email address with the list, and then you will receive messages and communicate with other participants through an email discussion. Most e-forums last two to three days. Follow this shortcut link for instructions on registering and joining an ALCTS e-Forum: www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/e-forum.

6) CATALOGING ICKY THINGS – ALCTS WEBINAR
Do you have “icky stuff” like kits, DVDs and models in a backroom that you want to add to your collection but you can’t find a MARC record for it? Has it been years since you have had to catalog anything and you think you have forgotten how? Did you finish your cataloging class in library school thinking you would never have to do that again but now you have to? Well this webinar can help!
Starting with a quick review of how to catalog a book, this webinar will then move to cataloging CDs and kits, DVDs and Playaways, and then whatever else you may have hidden in that backroom. You will get tips and cheats that will allow you to create a full-level MARC record so that you can move things out of that backroom and into your collection.
Cataloging Icky Things: or If You Can Catalog a Book, You Can Catalog Anything! is presented by Pamela Newberg on Wednesday, February 24, 2010 at 11a.m. PST. The cost is $39 for ALCTS members, $49 for non members and groups can register for $99. For additional information and to register, use this shortcut link: www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/icky.
