Countdown to the November 8th Day of Jubilation -Part 2
In October of 1871, prominent national suffrage advocate Susan B. Anthony traveled to Washington Territory and became the first woman to address the Washington Territorial Legislature. Anthony and Oregon suffragist Abigail Scott Duniway toured Washington Territory to promote women’s suffrage, spurring the creation of Suffrage Associations throughout the area.
Fast-forward to 2010, and plans are in the works to celebrate the 139th anniversary of Susan B. Anthony’s history-making visit this October in Olympia. Stay tuned for more details!

Just got a note from Dave Hastings over at the State Archives:
“You didn’t mention that as soon as she left town the Territorial Legislature specifically banned women from voting.”
He sent me a jpg of that anti-women 1871 law. If anyone wants a copy of his email, let me know —

Hopefully this legislature won’t be territorial, David Ammons. Is there any woman that promotes suffrage these days?
I don’t want to be an anti-woman that can’t vote in the legislature. Can you get a futuristic comment from Dave Hastings?

My answer to the promotion of suffrage is that the voters have proven the suffrage by the numerous initiative signatures being invalidated. The reason, I suppose, is that suffrage voters are found by the paid signature gatherers.
If my legislation doesn’t satisfactorily pass through the legislature, to law, to the rule making process, being strong enough to avoid court, I have to rely on the registered voters. I want the suffrage voters. I want those that have lost faith in the system to sign my consumer protection legislation.
I wrote my first comments with humor, then I thought of my future as a woman.
