The November 2 General Election is exactly one week away, and you’ve likely received a lot of campaign pieces in the mail. Most people throw away those campaign pieces. Fortunately, our State Archives loves to collect and preserve any campaign pieces it receives.

One example is this 1964 campaign item from the first of Republican Dan Evans’ three successful runs for Washington governor. Evans served as governor from 1965 until 1977, choosing not to run in 1976. In 1983, Evans was appointed by Gov. John Spellman to replace Henry Jackson as U.S. senator following Jackson’s death while in office. Later that year, Evans defeated Mike Lowry in a race to serve out the rest of Jackson’s unexpired term. Evans retired from the U.S. Senate in 1988.
