1) FIRST TUESDAYS – ROMANCE READERS’ ADVISORY

Library staff often express feelings of discomfort and inadequacy when faced with helping romance readers. This session is designed to combat those feelings and empower you to fearlessly engage romance readers in conversations about their favorite genre. Find out what makes a book a romance, become familiar with subgenres, popular authors and titles, and prepare to have your pre-conceptions about romance novels and their readers forever altered. (If you do not read in this genre, we encourage you to read a romance prior to attending.) Presented by Nancy Schutz and Kim Storbeck, Timberland Regional Library.

2) VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT FOR DAILY OLYMPIAN INDEXING

The Washington State Library Public Services program is searching for dedicated, computer-savvy, attention to detail-oriented individuals who are willing to dedicate a couple of hours a week to the indexing of the Olympian newspaper. Indexers would assist in keeping this valuable online tool available to historians and genealogists alike. Ability to read and comprehend English and summarize local newspaper articles required. Volunteers must be able to make decisions independently and feel comfortable seeking help when necessary. Some experience with Millennium cataloging or indexing is preferred, but not necessary. 3) SCHOLARSHIP MONEY AVAILABLE FOR FUTURE LIBRARIANS

The American Library Association (ALA) has more than $300,000 for students who are studying library science or school librarianship at the master’s degree level. Scholarships typically range from $1,500 to $7,000 per student per year. The application and instructions are available on-line at www.ala.org/scholarships. The application deadline is March 8, 2011.

There are many types of scholarships available for the study of librarianship. These include scholarships for students who are interested in children’s librarianship, youth librarianship, federal librarianship, new media and library automation. In addition, there are also scholarships available for minorities, persons with disabilities and for people who are already employed in libraries but do not have an MLS.

To be considered for one of these scholarships, applicants must attend a masters program in library and information science that has been accredited by the ALA. Applicants interested in school librarianship must attend a program that meets ALA curriculum guidelines for the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). 4) LIS FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE DIRECTORY

Need additional financial assistance? The 2011 Financial Assistance for Library and Information Studies Directory is an annual directory of awards from state library agencies, national and state library associations, local libraries, academic institutions and foundations that give some form of financial assistance for undergraduate and/or graduate education programs in library and information studies.

5) DIGITAL HUMANITIES START-UP GRANTS

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) invites applications to the Digital Humanities Start-Up Grants program. This program provides support for the planning or initial stages of innovative digital initiatives in any area of the humanities. Activities eligible for Level I support include brainstorming sessions, workshops, early alpha-level prototypes, and initial planning. Digital Humanities Start-Up Grants may involve planning and developing prototypes of new digital tools for preserving, analyzing, and making accessible digital resources, including libraries’ and museums’ digital assets. More fully-formed projects that are ready to begin implementation or demonstrate proofs of concept are eligible for Level II support.
