1) NEW DIGITAL COLLECTION – NORTH PEND OREILLE HERITAGE
The Washington Rural Heritage initiative is pleased to announce its newest digital collection, North Pend Oreille Heritage, available at www.washingtonruralheritage.org/pendoreille. A 2009-2010 grant project of the Metalines Community Library (Pend Oreille County Library District), the collection consists of over 900 historic photographs from the Library’s local history archive.
The collection provides a wide-ranging look at northern Pend Oreille County throughout the first half of the 20th century. Topics include: homesteading and town-building; development of the region’s timber and mining industries; construction of the Box Canyon and Boundary dams; steamboat and railroad travel along the Pend Oreille River; and hunting and fishing in this rugged corner of Washington. The region’s natural beauty is also evident in one-of-a-kind photos of the Selkirk Mountains and remote, inaccessible sections of the Pend Oreille River. A large portion of the collection documents early settlers and businessmen of Metaline Falls, a town which is celebrating its Centennial this year!
Follow along in coming days as we share some of our favorite photos from this collection on WSL’s new Facebook page: www.facebook.com/WashingtonStateLibrary.
Additional Washington Rural Heritage collections are slated for publication in 2011, with many new participants adding to their collections on a regular basis. A new grant cycle is planned for this spring. To learn more about participation in the initiative, contact Evan Robb, Project Manager, [email protected], 360.704.5228, or visit www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/WRH.

2) LIBRARY SNAPSHOT DAY FEATURES WSL ILS
The Institutional Library Services division of the Washington State Library celebrated 1/11/11 as Library Snapshot Day. This day was designed to showcase the libraries located in the prison and psychiatric hospitals of Washington. All of the libraries that are part of the Institutional Library Services of the Washington State Library took pictures, tracked usage statistics, and collected stories. The results will be posted throughout the week on the WSL ILS Facebook page: www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/WSL-ILS-Facebook.

3) FIRST TUESDAYS – WTBBL NEEDS YOU!
The Washington Talking Book & Braille Library (WTBBL), along with other libraries for the blind and physically handicapped, is going through a major media change-analog gives way to digital. For a better understanding of this change, and what it means for WTBBL, its patrons, and for other libraries, join WTBBL’s Eura Ryan for the February First Tuesdays webinar, Feb. 1 at 9 a.m. Also learn how public libraries can assist WTBBL community members in downloading free books that patrons can keep for life. For instructions on joining the webinar, visit www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/FirstTuesdays.

4) WASHINGTON LIBRARIES HELP JOB SEEKERS
Thirteen Washington libraries’ websites are listed in Webjunction’s Web Resources for Job Seekers. Other than the state of Connecticut, it appears that Washington has the most libraries in the nation with library webpages designed to help their communities with job searching information. To view, go to wiki.webjunctionworks.org/index.php/Workforce_Resources and scroll down to Washington.
If your library has a webpage devoted to job seekers or resources for job seekers and it is not listed, please contact Karen Goettling at [email protected] or Betha Gutsche at [email protected] for inclusion in the list. For more information on workforce resources, news, and webinars for libraries providing services to jobseekers go to www.webjunction.org/workforce-resources.
