1) MATH AND SCIENCE LITERACY TRAINING FOR LIBRARIANS
The Washington State Library has purchased math and science early learning kits for each public and tribal library in the State of Washington. Each library attending one of the free half-day training sessions will receive a box of resource materials and a training manual, valued at over $700 (only one kit per library). These kits are the result of a grant from the National Science foundation and are part of the “What’s the Big Idea? Making Math and Science Come Alive for Children and Families in Your Libraries” program, organized by the Vermont Center for the Book.
Trainings will be offered at the following dates and times.
- Anacortes: April 13, 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. PDT;
- Keller Tribal Resource Library: April 15 , 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. PDT;
- Yakama Nation, Toppenish: 10:00 April 29 , 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. PDT;
- Walla Walla City Library: May 18, 10:00 a.m. PDT;
Look for one additional training to be scheduled in western Washington in June.

2) TARGET STORE GRANTS SUPPORT READING PROGRAMS
Reading is essential to a child’s learning process. That’s why Target awards grants to schools, libraries and nonprofit organizations to support programs such as after-school reading events and weekend book clubs. The goal is to foster a love of reading and to encourage children to read with their families.
Early Childhood Reading Grants are for $2,000. Grant applications are typically accepted between March 1 and April 30 each year, with grant notifications delivered in September. Use this shortcut link for more information and to apply: www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/target1.

3) IFFLA SOCIAL MEDIA SURVEY
Social media have become a hugely important force in the world, and the historic events in recent months have proven how integral they are to how we engage, learn, and communicate in 2011.
In an effort to learn more about how librarians, library workers, library students, and library associations use social media, the Free Access to Information and Freedom of Expression committee of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) has developed a short survey on these topics. The hope is that the results will allow IFLA to better communicate with those in the worldwide library community – using the most effective tools available. IFLA is also very interested in those who DON’T use certain social media, and why not.
Please take a few moments to complete the survey – and share it widely with your colleagues and members: www.surveymonkey.com/IFLAsocialmedia.
