Looking back: Seattle’s Great Fire

It was on this date in 1889 that Seattle’s Great Fire occurred. This photo of the fire was taken from Pike Street. This 2003 piece by Walt Crowley in HistoryLink.org sheds more light on the disaster, which resulted in the destruction of 64 acres in downtown Seattle. After the fire, the rebuild relied on brick and stone. The rebuilt area, Pioneer Square, is still around and is one of Seattle’s more popular places.
